Coleman heat pump
Hello I have 3 ac units on the roof 2 were replaced last summer with dometic units
The remaining unit is an older Coleman Mach 15 heat pump and it has an extra electric heat element in it
The other day when it was very cold there was hardly any heat
We replaced the heat element but it just doesn’t warm up. I was thinking the thermostat is bad. It is just a dial on the unit
Does anyone have any other ideas on what to check
Just to be clear the heat pump definitely works just the extra heat element will not turn on

How cold is very cold? Heat pumps are pretty much useless below 40 deg outside temperature. Also are you referring to the electric heat strip or the heat pump operating.

It was cold. In the 30s
The heat pump definitely puts out heat but the heat strip does not

Ok do the basic simple stuff first.
Check fuses.
Check for power at the element. Then work back.
Using the schematic, locate where the element is fed from.
Is the dial stat just for the element?
Work safe and if you are not comfortable working with electricity, then don't start. Remember the left had rule.
Hope this helps.

The temp control is just a knob on the unit that goes from cold to hot
Then there is a second knob to switch from high ac low ac fan and high heat
I did notice that once in a while while turning the temp knob the the breaker will trip. This unit is probably as old as the vehicle 2004

I am surprised you even get an usable heat below 40 degF outside temp. The outside coil will ice over and can no longer transfer heat.

Likely the temperature control cycles the compressor.
The other is your fan control and hi heat will bring on the element.
I think this will be the way it is wired up.
Turning the temp knob can trip the breaker under certain conditions.
Hope this helps

My heat pump does not work below about 40, in fact I never use it any more.

It’s funny with all 3 units going the vehicle actually gets hot and we have to turn them off
The old heat strip was all corroded and rusty so we figured that it was just burnt out. I am going to have to open this back up when I’m at work on Monday
