Converter issue I think

During our trip to a family reunion, we started having problems with the lights in the coach dimming and then bright. I checked the batteries and found one low on water, so i refilled it . When we got home both coach batteries were dead.

I removed the batteries from the coach to have them tested. I disconnected and tested the converter and was getting the full 13.6 volts. hooked it back up and nothing. disconnected it again and full 13.6 volts. hooked it up and nothing. then suddenly it was working. so i turned on the disconnect switch and everything worked. I turned off the switch and about an hour later went to check and again nothing.

So my unprofessional option is bad converter.

Is there anything else i should be checking?

the converter is WFCO 45 amp.
the motor home is a 2004 fleetwood terra.

If your on shore power leave the disconnect switch on.

It allows the converter to charge the battery. Only turn it off if storing without power.

You didn't mention the converter make/model, so I'm guessing. However, many "smart" converter/chargers will refuse to charge a battery it thinks it may be internally shorted or has a dead cell, and a dead battery often looks like that. Especially if the cell is out of water. I'm guessing you fiddled with it until the battery got enough charge to look ok and the charger went back to normal charging again.
