Cooling system, filling air pockets?

I have a DP, side radiator which I drained the coolant and refilled the system but on test run the transmission temp redlined while the engine temp went to normal temp. It seems there might be a separate radiator for trans and engine coolants.

I filled the engine block with coolant through the thermostat port then filled the coolant reservoir. Total was 12 gallons.

I drained the radiator through a petcock on the bottom of a radiator.

On my rig, I need to run the dash heater on high and allow air to expel via the vent mounted just behind the surge tank to remove air pockets.

Trust me, burping the system was necessary as I spent nearly $400 in unsuccessful diagnostics at Allison and Cummins before accidentally learning that after replacing the coolant the Tech had not burped the engine......

The instructions were in the Cummins engine manual and on the Surge Tank.

I filled my system via the surge tank.

I had to have my side radiator replaced and the entire system flushed and refilled. I took it on 2 short trips and didn't have a problem but then headed east on a long trip and after ~1300 miles I was about 1/2 gallon low on coolant. The only difference was that I ran the heater when it got cold and I think this is where the additional coolant went. I filled my surge tank back up to my mark and have driven it ~500 miles with no change.

My radiator had the transmission cooler built into it. You should be able to tell if yours is the same by looking at the transmission hoses and see where they run. Mine ran to the side of the radiator toward the front of the coach, one connected at the top and one at the bottom.

Check to see if there is a small stopcock valve under the thermostat housing, it can be hard to see, this is where you can bleed the air off your system.
