Cruising Speed

Being new in the RV world I have numerous questions and here is my latest.

At what speed do you people usually cruise on an interstate highway?

I travel at about 60mph because the previous owner said that was the best speed for fuel economy and he would average 12 MPG on a trip.

On my last trip of just under 500 miles, I tried to cruise at 60mph and at the end I got 8.2 MPG. Now mind you that was through the hills in the Finger Lakes, but still getting almost half of what he did.

Unfortunately, I can't ask him any questions because he passed away just after selling me the rig.

So I will be very appreciative of all what you have to say on this subject.

Average 12 MPG? I don't think he was completely honest about that.


60-65 MPH and average 7.5 MPG in my 34" gasser.

For What it's worth -

I have a 42' diesel pusher with 400HP Cummins...

My mileage is probably 6.5 to 8.5 MPG 85% of the time at 62 MPH.

I have an older Ford F53 with V10. I average 7.0 mpg, running 62-65 mph with gross weight of 23,000 lbs fully loaded dragging a toad..

12 mpg ??? I think PO was delusional.

I pretty much set the cruise at the speed limit. Depending on traffic I my be slightly higher or lower as I try to go with the general speed.

I get ~8 mpg pulling a Jeep. I've tested going slower or faster and it doesn't make a lot of difference.

FYI, if you get a Silverleaf VMSpc you'll get a very accurate reading of fuel mileage and be able to see consumption based on speed.

Imo, “most” class A MH get between 6 & 8 MPG. You should accept the PO’s claim as marketing hype. It ain’t gonna happen.

Use Search. Both cruising speed and MPG and both discussed together have been exhausted about a zillion times on this forum.

If you are calculating your mileage correctly, you are getting better than most. But you are also driving slower than most.

Tires on your coach most likely have a speed rating of 75mph. That doesn't mean that the tire manufacturer intended for you to cruise at 75, but rather that they'd be safe to do so for a specific length of time. I believe that it is a ten-minute standard.

I always try to leave considerable head room on any system capacity or rating like that. My cruise speed is between 60-65,usually right around 62mph.

Speed limits are often higher, sometimes lots higher. Sometimes in excess of the tire speed rating. Don't let speed limit for the road get confused with safe speed for your coach.

Heh, heh, 12 mpg. Your doing pretty good at 8.2. Our 33’ gasser gives us 6-7 at 60-65 cruising speed. I don’t go go much faster than that unless I need to temporarily if the situation dictates it.

Mileage can vary by 20% depending on the driver habits. Last week my Chevy DRW got 14.3 mpg on I-80 in NE pulling a gross wt of 25k. Now this is with cruise set at 60, very little wind, flat road, and not touching the brakes for 300 miles (probably the best condition to have). Usually I get around 9/10 mpg off the X-way.

My 45', 52,000# 650 hp mh gets 7.7 mpg over the last 56,000 miles towing a CR-V.
My previous 32,000# MH with 350 HP ISC and Banks kit (432hp) got under 8 towing a Honda Ody.
I cruise at about 62 using the cruise control.

If you were to search all the threads regarding MPG you would find that almost everyone is getting 6.5-8.5 mpg. I think perhaps the previous owner may have fudged his estimates or he was bad in math.

Cruising speed in our old 30' gasser was 65-70 unless we wanted to talk then I brought it down to 60. At 55 we got 10mpg at 65 around 8mpg. Light weight, no slides short length.
