Dang it! Did it again!

So I had unplugged my RV from my 50amp line and went to get emissions tested (I was exempted!) and got back as it started to rain. Backed the rig in, leveled it, and ran inside...forgot plug it in.

Went out today to get something out of the rig and the steps didn't come out. Looked back and it wasn't plugged in . Batteries showing 9.8 volts.

I watered them up, plugged back in and am hoping for a reprieve (I don't boondock, so I really don't work them very hard).

My question is: the Trip Lite is showing the battery is low (duh), the fan is running, input if from LINE, inside shows voltage ranging from 12.9 - 13.9 volts.

How long should I wait until I know if the batteries will take and hold charge?

There shouldn't be enough 'phantom' loads on your chassis battery to drain it that much overnite!

We lost power for 9hrs at a state park. After power came back on My Tripp-Lite fan came on and ran for about 1hr before it turned off. The batteries showed med level when it started to charge.

If you reading house battery volts, you need to charge them up to 14.6 volts, then the charger will drop to 13.6 as it sits in absorb mode for a few hours.

If you don't fully charge them they will live a short life.

Sorry, should have stated - a little over a week later..... so I was unplugged for a week.

Looks like everything is back in the green...charge sitting around 13.2 - 13.9 volts. The Propane detector went off (propane off, though), so I silenced it and it now seems happy.

To quote from the movie Office Space: I always forget some mundane detail......

Recheck the water in the batteries when charged.

Propane detectors will go off when they sense batteries gassing. Hydrogen is a flammable gas.

Yes, we had that happen to us, batteries had a problem and the propane sensor went off. It’s not intuitive to check batteries in that instance. AND why does it always happen at 2AM?

Checked water in batteries - all is good. Detector has remained happy.

Now, if I can just avoid another mindless mistake....

Would turning the salesman switch off be a good thing or not? I keep my rig plugged in to a 50 amp outlet (when I remember to plug it in ).

I have the fridge breaker turned off. TV switch thingee in the closet off (has to do with a video switching or something). microwave breaker is off. heating/Air is off. TV's are 110volt so I assume their parasitic power is on the 110v shore power, the radio is on 12 v and I assume so other minor 12v powered background appliances like the inverter/converter - not that I intend to test the issu....

So the question is: does it still charge the house batteries if the salesman switch is off?

Depends on how it is wired but I would leave it on if plugged in. Switch is to conserve batteries when you are not plugged in and may prevent charging.

The battery disconnect switch probably doesn't switch off the inverter section of the inverter/charger.

If you leave the inverter ON, and loose shore power, it can run your batteries down pretty fast.

Some will draw 2 amps or more in standby mode. That's 48 AH a day.

Best to shut that off while stored.
