DEF

Looking to upgrade from class A gas to diesel. Is there a downside to having to use Def, other than cost?

One of the reviews I saw had the DEF tank at the rear and the Diesel tank at the front causing you to have to move the coach to fuel one after filling the other. I don't remember which model. All newer coaches have lots of emmisions and sensors to deal with gas vs diesel isn't that much different. I prefer an older coach that doesn't have all the extra stuff but if you want anything newer than 2006-7 your gonna have to deal with it.

The downside to DEF is not the DEF, it’s the sensors and delivery system that can have issues. Some have never had a problem, others have had several sensor failures that derate or shut down the engine. Varies by year, generally, with post 2016 engines the most commonly mentioned.

Do some searches as there is no single, simple answer.

The cost isn’t really much of a deal for us as it goes a long ways. There are some coaches that seem to have gotten def equipment that may be prone to issues but considering the number of coaches and trucks out there with def systems I’m not sure what the true failure rate is given total numbers. But like any bit of very complicated equipment it’s one more potential issue and being stuck somewhere with your coach delayed cannot be at all a good time. We’re at 32,000 plus miles and not a glitch and I like the clean exhaust. AND, I probably just jinxed myself...

100% agree - I am one of those unlucky ones that has had several issues with the DEF system - from the sensor to the pump to the dosing unit to the head...fortunately it hasn't happened on the road and so far covered by warranty...
