Diesel and Tiki Torches?

I have actually been meaning to post this question for about a year ... with warmer weather now upon us ... I guess not is the time.
Question (posed as a logic question) :
1) Tiki torch fuel = kerosene (mostly)
2) diesel fuel = kerosene (mostly)
Can diesel fuel be used in Tiki torches???

Have any of you DP owners "diverted" some of your diesel fuel for use in Tiki torches? Fuel at the pumps is at least half the price of the torch fuel you can buy at Home Depot.....

Thanks for your input!

At the cost of one torch and a little diesel I see no reason not to try it. If I had one I'd try it for ya right now.

I do know the old school grove warmers (smudge pots) ran off diesel vapor but they didn't have a wick as far as I know.

Diesel is stinky, smelly stuff, unless you can keep it off your hands, feet, pants, shoes, and ground while you fill your Tikis, why bother? Flame on......

Most Tiki torch fuel is mixed with Citronella to act as a bug repellent. I think diesel fuel would just smell bad.

I agree that it would likely smell very bad burning.
It may burn without issue, but I'm not sure that you'd really care for the results.

Diesel fuel needs to be just a little "oily" for the sake of the engine's pumps and injectors. That added lubricity enhancer will add some smoke and smell that K-1 kerosene won't have.

As noted above, Tiki fuel may have Citronella in it, and you'll lose that benefit, but also that smell (if undesirable to you).

It's hard to go wrong with K-1, but it's at least double the cost of diesel. You'll sure want to stay away from "Pure Lamp Oil" if you want to be frugal.

We use it all the time 😁 we don't usually smell anything that bad...does seam to keep bugs at bay. I have to say we use at least 4 torches when we camp, and it can cost a small fortune buying their fluid. We also carry disposable gloves with us for dumping and filling the tiki torches.

Well .. I should admit that I am more interested in the "mood lighting" aspects of the torches than any smell. Frankly, I have never found the citronella to help at all with keeping bugs at bay. Thank you for the input folks!!

I've never tried diesel but my old school lamps and my tiki torches have always burned Jet A, Prist and all.

I don't like Citronella and the mossies don't like the taste of me but I do like the odour of burning A so it's never been an issue for me.
