Only some engines can be equipped with either an engine brake or a pacbrake....
Its based on the factory engine configuration... some engines can't handle an engine brake and some can't handle exhaust brakes.. when you talk about an exhaust brake, it must have exhaust valve springs that are of a high enough compression valve to prevent back pressure in the exhaust system from pushing the valve open, and striking the piston...
In some cases, some early engines had lighter springs but the engine manufacturer approved heavier springs.. that's the case in some of the Cummins engines... as an example the road version might of had one value and the off road version has a higher pressure spring... Cummins might certify the higher compression spring in the on road version of the engine... This was the case in some of the 5.9 engines in the Dodge Pickups....
Hope this helps...
