I used my TSD card when possible, but I certainly don't go miles out of my way to do so. I used it yesterday at a Loves and saved .05cents/gal. I realize the significant savings are at a T/A or Petro, but those aren't always convenient. While it's true you can only use in the Truck lanes, that's never a problem. If you're professional driver, or rack up a ton of miles hauling your rv, the savings can definitely add up, but in general (for most people), it's only a modest savings. That said, it always feels good to save some money, when you can.

Thanks!

[QUOTE=.........TSD debits your account to pay for that fuel almost immediately. In other words, they get paid right away, ........[/QUOTE]

That has not been my experience. I fill up with the TSD card, truck lanes. I like hob knobbing with the Pros. Usually the next day sometimes two I receive an emailed "Agent Purchase Summary". It is then I move the amount I owe into a dedicated bank account which normally has a $0 balance. There may be a grace period involved here but as I move the money within 24hrs of receiving the Summary, TSD has never squawked.

Here is the drill I use when traveling. When I get to 1/4 tank I pull out the cell phone. Open Gas Buddy and TSD. Whomever has the cheapest diesel along my route gets my business.

DEF Fill

Like your rig, my DEF tank is on the passenger's side. When I need to top-off my DEF tank, I use this method: I carry two empty 2.5-gallon DEF jugs. After filling my diesel, I then fill these two DEF jugs and carry them with me. Then when I stop for the night, I top-off my DEF tank with these two filled jugs. This way, I enjoy the "bulk price" of DEF that the truck stop offers, but don't hold up any truckers while trying to fill my DEF tank.

I’m not lying or delusional. The nozzle goes in about 2 or 3 inches and then hits something that stops it.

I don’t think the nozzle goes in more than 3 inches or so on my filler.....but still works fine.....will the fuel go in ok with the nozzle in 3 inches for you ?

What's a TSD card? I used to buy diesel at truck stops but it seems they average 20 - 30 cents higher than off the highway gas stations now, so I use Gas Buddy and have to maneuver a little more 36ft with a toad. At Murphy's stations I get points and cash back on my card...

If not there is a fee usually $1.50. If you want this removed just contact TSD. This allows you while you are traveling not to have to pay ATM fees if you need cash.

That could be convent....

I pay the $1 fee to TSD to use pay at the pump in the truck lanes at Pilot/Flying J when that’s my only option because they’re that much better than the auto pumps.

I do try to tanker into the oil patch/Pilot only areas to the extent I can because it’s so much cheaper...

It is...especially when the only source of civilization for miles and miles is a truck stop and a taco truck at a wide spot in the road.

Ok, I am a newbie to the RV world. Help me out with the fuel questions; #1. I have a 38’ Renegade with a 16’ toad. Where are the best places to fuel up and not get stuck trying to turn this rig around? #2. What Diesel/DEF stop is more common when traveling the country, if there is one?

We tow our trailer with a new 2021 1500 Ecodiesel Ram that has a 33 gallon tank. We are on a cross country trip, started in Syracuse NY and are now in Corpus Christi TX. We usually fill up every day and go about 400 miles.

The prices we've been seeing for diesel are all over the place, from as low as $2.25 (using GasBuddy) in NY (of all places) to as high as $3.95 in PA. But the big surprise for us on our first long distance trip is how expensive diesel is at the truck stops! Pilot, Loves, Flying J, TA prices are consistently $0.50 more than prices on GasBuddy. We've even seen truckstops at $1.00 more than GasBuddy, at the same exit! I thought I'd be using the TSD card every day, but I've only used it once to make sure it works. Nor have I used my Good Sam's card.

The biggest hassle has been that some of the diesel pumps at some regular gas stations seem slower filling than their gas pumps...

It would seem that the truck stops are charging more for convenience, they have faster pumps, and are easier to get in and out of and have DEF at the pump.

BTW, the new 2021 Ram takes the big boy truck nozzles just fine: nozzle in, fill to automatic shut off in less than 2 minutes, wait 30 seconds for foam to settle, then add another gallon until it clicks off again. Done. There isn't even a gas cap to remove on the Ram.

My question is how much discount off of the posted price can I get with the discount card at the truck stops? We just finished a 1000 mile trip from Florida and those are the prices we saw.
Here's a very recent actual Lexington, VA T/A
Pump price $3.259
Discount (net) $0.678
Actual fuel cost $2.62

Even on a small 50 gal purchase that $34
Beats PFJ /GS $0.08 any day of the week.

Donn - I'm pretty much a newbie myself, having never had a rig this long before July of last year. I find this post one of the most confusing I've read on the iRV2 forum. Basically, we're arguing Diesel, for everything from a Diesel truck pulling who knows what, to a motorhome of unknown length without a toad, to a motorhome of unknown length pulling a toad. So basically, anything from 30-64 feet!!! Naturally, the opinions about where to fuel and convenience would be wide and varied, cost not even being considered.

Personally, I found out very quickly with my rig (2008 Monaco Knight 40DFT and Honda CR-V, totaling about 60 feet), it isn't much fun pulling into someplace intended for automobiles even if I've looked it over on Google Maps and decided there's potentially room. I end up blocking two sets of pumps, or hanging one end or the other into the driving lanes intended for ingress and egress. And getting in and out may involve occupying a lot of real estate while waiting for a diesel pump to clear. We've even used pumps on the auto side that were marked for diesel RV use, and found them to be very tight, or jammed up against store parking fore or aft, or with trees/signs/other obstructions.

So, for my taste (and nerves), I'd rather pull in the "back" at a truck stop at the fast flow diesel pumps where there is MORE than plenty of room. It was a pain at first, since I was running in to pay a deposit, then back out to pump, then back in for a receipt. Some truck stop counters are just not set up for that, and they seem a little irritated, but not often. This TSD card thingy seems to take care of that, even at non-TSD participating stations where you have to pay an extra $1 -- although you still have to run inside if you want a receipt. I will just take a pic of the pump and write down the purchase in my log).

That's my 2 cents. I'll be interested to hear what you decide. The TSD info earlier in this thread tells where to register. You have to give them a bank acct and routing number, as well as your SS#. I guess if 1000's of people have done that, it must be OK.

Happy motoring,
Steve P
