Uh...2 cylinders. Also the difference of a Ford transmission and Allison or GM transmission. Suspension designs are also different. You'll hear from both sides that their brand is the best thing since sliced bread.

Model year has a bearing, early Ford V10s had spark plug issues, since resolved in later models. Transmissions have also gone through many improvements.

GM is an eight cylinder 8.1 liter big block engine.

Ford guys like Ford's, GM guys like Chevy's.

I'm a GM guy. I love my 8.1 Vortec and 6 speed Allison.

I love Allison.... all models are a + in my book.
I've had the GM 8.1l engine & Allison tranny and think it's a winning combo.
Would that stop me from an otherwise good deal w the right layout...probably not.

X2 I did buy the Ford V10 because it was a good deal and a layout we liked.

First off, the 8.1L GM "was" a more powerful engine than the Ford V-10. I was never fortunate to own one but, I was lead to believe and, read in many brochures etc. that two coaches, both almost identical, one with the GM setup and one with the Ford setup, the GM one would run down the road at considerably less RPM than the Ford did, at the same speed. It was due to the GM having more torque, as I'm lead to believe.

And, as far as the ride is concerned, the Ford units have had the F-53 chassis for years and years and, there's been multiple writeups on how bad they are in terms of smoothness. Many folks have tried multiple ways of smoothing them out. But, I've not heard of that many, if at all, any ride problems with GM chassis coaches. I'm sure there will be somebody that chimes in here with some GM chassis issues.

The V-10 from Ford, has gone through a few changes. The first ones were 275HP and, had a few problems with spark plugs blowing out of their holes due to very few threads but, that's been a while ago. The newer generations V-10s come in two different forms. There's a 310HP version for the class Cs and a 365HP version for the Class As. The reason for the two different versions is, the heads on the 365 HP versions are different and, I think they're wider and won't fit in the Class Cs. Someone will verify that.

The early, 275Hp versions were helped quite a bit with the installation of a "Banks" kit. Those kits are not cheap (around $3K or so, way back when) but, they kicked up the performance pretty good. But, as I'm told and have read on here more than once, the Banks kit is not nearly as helpful on the later 310HP or 365 HP versions. Again, someone with authority needs to confirm this stuff as, I'm only repeating what I've read.

Our previous coach, a '99 Fleetwood Bounder 34V with the 275HP V-10, came with the Banks kit already installed so, I cannot really say for sure what the real performance difference was in the "before" and after. I can tell you, that coach was no rocket ship. I did ok. We towed several different jeeps from San Diego to Moab for the Easter Jeep Safari with that coach and, it made there and back, each and every time. And for those that know that route, there's plenty of grades involved.

What two motorhomes? The 8.1 hasn't been available for several years.

Nah, floor plan and coach builder, and how well it's been maintained are all more important than the engine brand.
