DIY bunk over the cab?

Hi everyone,

I'm brand new to the world of RVing but we're doing our research and future planning and we're really excited to start our journey!

We are a family of 5 (3 kids 10, 8 & 3). We're looking at bunkhouse models (2009 Tiffin 35QBA) which solves for our younger two but we're trying to solve for our oldest. We would love to create a space for her to call her own. We love the Class C over cab bunk but we definitely want/need the space/storage of the Class A.

After that long winded intro, my question is: Has anyone here built a permanent bunk over the cab in their Class A? I would love to see pictures

Thanks!

I have no idea if anyone has done this but you might want to check into a Super C type motor home. Most of them have an bed over the front seats or at least an option for it.

I did have an old, 1970s model Apollo class A motor home that had a pull down bed over front seats. Whether you could find one of those in a scrap yard somewhere I don't know. If you do decide to go that route you need to pay a lot of attention to how they mounted it to the coach. I know that Apollo had 2x2 steel framing in the walls and I'm sure the bed was mounted to that. I don't think that modern construction of laminated fiberglass walls would take the stress of that set up.

I also recall seeing some sort of over the seat beds that were supported but stanchions that bolted to the floor of the RV. Don't know much about them but it might be worth checking into. Good luck.

Watched the video and thought of what I used to support my solar array over my boats bridge.

Check out Kee Lite fittings. They can be handy for building something like an overhead bunk.

Cabover type bed would of course work best for mid door entry Class A. I remember a detailed post here of a DIY electric drop down bed. Few and far between Flexsteel produced a bunk bed over sofa system, unfortunately they are now recently out of RV furniture business . Also I have read they dropped all support for RVers that may have several thousands worth of in their furniture in RV.

My fw storm 32bh has the drop down queen over the cab. If you go into rvt.com or rvtrader And put in “sleeps 8” or bunk house you’ll get any units that meet the criteria. I do know from looking that Winnebago, Thor and tiffin had models with the drop down. Mine is a class a but the drop down cannot be down while driving. In the class c the occupants of the over cab bunk could be there while traveling.
