Do fuel filters have a shelf life?
I have two Fleetguards that I have had as long as I have had the coach, about 7 years. They are still encased in the shrink wrap they ship in. Should I hold onto them or toss?

Read post #4 here http://www.irv2.com/forums/f123/how-...rs-189150.html ....and if use use the google search bar, there is a lot of reading on this.......
If the have been stored in good climate conditions and no rust is present on top.....I would not have a problem using them.......get them used up soon though.

Officially yes, but I agree with palehorse89.
Have you never changed the filters, or simply always had new ones installed? Best practice is to buy new ones when you install the ones on hand. That way the spares are always fresh.

I vacuum seal my filters, extending the shelf life. An inexpensive vacuum sealer from Walmart comes in very handy in the RV.

I just installed a 17 year old Mobil diesel filter about 7 Months ago. No problems and the filter still looked new with no flaking etc.

Thanks for that link. That pretty much settles it for me.

I buy my filters off e-bay by the 1/2 dozen for max discount and use about 1 fuel filter a year so sometimes I carry a 6 year supply under the back seat.

Ever heard of new old parts? Why would they expire?

What settled it for me was Big Mike at Camp Freightliner 1 class. He said they expire in the sense that the glues and such holding them together will deteriorate. He said sealing them with a cheap Walmart food sealer will extend their life. Don’t forget to include belts in the sealing discussion. What really drove the point home was Big Mike showed us a bad air filter that age deteriorated where part of the filter went into the engine resulting in the engine needed to be partially rebuilt. The filter is MUST less costly than engine problems. Easy decision for me.

Been using new old parts and filters for 30 years. I just put everything in freezer bags.

That's a bit misleading, I think. The filter in question was an air cleaner that had been in place and in use for some years. Not really comparable to a "shelf life" concern. However, the point still holds that some materials do age and can fail for reasons other than wear & tear.

Always let my Fruitcakes age at least three years before eating. Yum yum!
As for carrying spare filters and Serp, they are vacuum sealed.
