Exclamation Dometic Fire

Our Dometic refrigerator started to smell of ammonia so we shut it off.

I went outside removed the cover and started to investigate.

Then it caught on fire.

I had to extinguish it three times.

Shut off lp and all breakers.

Wonder why it could catch fire when shut off?

It is the leaking ammonia that is burning, not propane. Dangerous stuff, inhaling it is bad too.

If you smelled ammonia then the cooling unit developed a leak. These also have hydrogen gas in the cooling units which is flammable.

Ammonia & hydrogen are highly flammable.....especially when you removed the lower vent cover and increased the available air to the hot mixture

Glad you caught it & where able to extinguish the fire

Just curious.......
Which Model is your fridge?
Original..2006 vintage?
2006 is during the time frame Dometic & Norcold cut production costs by going to thinner walled tubing in the mfg of cooling units.

The fridge boiler reaches 700-800 degrees when it fails and overheats, so more than enough to keep re-igniting the leaking ammonia-hydrogen mixture. The fire is neither propane nor electrical, so turning it off has little effect.

Thanks everybody!

Dometic NDR 1062 w/ice maker. I assume it is the original unit.

Wasn't aware of the hydrogen. Thanks!

Off to Camping World in Flagstaff next week to have the replacement unit installed.

I always have an extinguisher outside by the BBQ stand. After a career in submarines old habits die hard lol.

Do some reading on these pages about switching to residential. May save yourself some money, even if you have to buy the inverter/upgraded batteries. And then you'll have those for other uses as well.

Pros and cons either way, but worth reading about.

Be careful with CW. They have a very poor reputation for service work. Incredibly poor. For the shop you are thinking of using, check RVServiceReviews.com to see if there are any reviews. There are a very few CW's that have a fairly good rep. Also google 'complaints about <name and location of service shop>' to see more reviews by locals.

Good luck. There have been some fire related deaths due to those defective refers so glad to hear you caught it in time.

Going electric only

Yes good idea. Didn't want to loose LP mode of operation as we like to boondock. However with the 7kw genset and Xantrex 1500W inverter all electric is reasonable. Only have two 12 volt house batteries though. And will be adding solar here soon as I have enough disposable residual income to support it.
