We just went through the same exercise - ours was a Dometic SeaLand 111 toilet and we heard something "ratchet" in the flush mechanism, then it seemed to lose about half of its tension so it wouldn't close completely unless we allowed it to really "slam" shut. Doing some online shopping we found a place that sold replacement parts and decided that since the toilet was about 15 years old we might want to replace the entire flushing mechanism instead of just the spring (or whatever was broken). The entire mechanism was priced at around $280 if I recall, and a complete new toilet (Dometic 320) was about the same price. So, we ended up putting in a brand new toilet!
