Door Awning Options

Our door awning has bit the dust. It was useless anyway. When it rained the awning even when closed just funneled water into the entryway. We want to remove it and put up some kind of gutter system.

Has anyone done this kind of modification?

Beside the awning failure, you had something else wrong. I had an '08 40' bus and the awning kept the water off the door if it was open or closed. I did have an issue with it right after we took delivery, but the factory caulked it and added a piece of rubber in the front gap between the awning and the coach body. If you can get it to someone who knows what they're doing, they may be able to solve your water running down the door problem.

Also, are you sure the awning is dead? On a coach before the 40', I also had a problem with the awning drive motor. Had to clear some drain holes, free and lube the motor bearings and lightly sand the motor commutator. Worked fine for 75,000 miles. If you pull the awning on the '08 Bus, you'll be faced with trying to plug a 1/2-3/4" hole where the control wires come through the side, and also deal with a string of screw holes where the awning rail is presently screwed to the Bus side. It can be done, but more than a casual Saturday afternoon job.

Good luck

Thanks for your reply pigman1. We had all the modifications done to prevent the water being funneled down onto the steps. Nothing worked. A couple years ago the awning froze in the out position. Could not manually get it back in or strap it back. Since we had time constraints decided to take the motor out and that was the end of my fiddling with trying to make a silk purse out of a sows ear.

I'm thinking of something that can be attached in the same location and cover up all screw holes and be angled slightly to direct the water run off away from the steps.
