Beside the awning failure, you had something else wrong. I had an '08 40' bus and the awning kept the water off the door if it was open or closed. I did have an issue with it right after we took delivery, but the factory caulked it and added a piece of rubber in the front gap between the awning and the coach body. If you can get it to someone who knows what they're doing, they may be able to solve your water running down the door problem.
Also, are you sure the awning is dead? On a coach before the 40', I also had a problem with the awning drive motor. Had to clear some drain holes, free and lube the motor bearings and lightly sand the motor commutator. Worked fine for 75,000 miles. If you pull the awning on the '08 Bus, you'll be faced with trying to plug a 1/2-3/4" hole where the control wires come through the side, and also deal with a string of screw holes where the awning rail is presently screwed to the Bus side. It can be done, but more than a casual Saturday afternoon job.
Good luck
