DP under 40' w/10,000 lb tow capacity

Looking for models with 10,000 lb tow capacity preferably under 40'. Like the Phaeton 36' models fit the bill but what other coaches are out there with this tow capacity? My budget puts me in a used unit and I've been looking at the Phaeton's between 2008 and 2014. I like the Phaeton due to the 1,000+ Ft Lbs of torque.


We live on the east coast and plan to travel a few summers primarily out west and most likely tow an F150 supercrew. My current one is 2020 V8 Supercrew with 6.5' bed so it's probably pushing 6,000 lbs.

Newmar coaches and the last couple of years that Monaco was still making coaches (2008 -2009).

Our first Newmar was a 2014 Dutch Star. It was a true 40' coach and had a tag axle. Not only a 15K tow rating, but a huge cargo carrying capacity. Newmar is the only coach company currently making a 40' with a tag axle.

The Coachmen Sportscoach also has a 10K towing capacity, but the torque is only 660. I pull a full size Silverado (5700) with no problems.

As was mentioned, you may want to consider a used Newmar. I was looking up the brochure for a 2007 Newmar Kountry Star for somebody else the other day and they offered four plans back then at 36' 7" that have a 10,000 lb towing capacity, including a 10k rated hitch as OE.

It's on a Spartan Mountain Master GT chassis, independent front suspension, 350 HP Cummins ISL with side radiator.

I believe the 350 HP Cummins ISL used was rated at 1,050 lbs of torque but I'll have to check further on that.

What price range are you looking at? You should(?) be able to get a much more late model 36-foot Newmar than 2007.

They're looking for a 36-footer or something under 40 feet, I'm kind of thinking back and I don't remember the Revolution having a 36-footer. Did they make one? ...which year?
















edited to add: However, now that you mention Fleetwood perhaps the OP should look at the newer Fleetwood Discovery. I'm not that familiar with Fleetwood since they were acquired by REV so can't personally comment on the quality but a newer coach that has what they're looking for might work depending on their price range.

For example, here are the specifications on a 2021 Fleetwood Discovery LXE specific to the OP's inquiry: 1) 36HQ is 36' 9" long, 2) has a 10,000 towing capacity, 3) 10k rated hitch as OE, 4) Cummins ISL 380 HP with 1,150 lb ft torque

2nd edit: 2Ropes, I'm not sure just what your price range is but that 2021 might be outside your budget ...? And, the older and shorter Discovery models look to have a towing capacity of only 7,500 lbs.

I had a ‘05 Monaco knight 36pdd that had that capacity. ISC Cummins with Alison 3000 trans.

Our budget is around $150K, we can do that comfortably and have insurance money for repairs or things plus be able to travel. My wife is retired and I'm done after this year, I survey communications lines and have been lucky to have local jobs the last two years and it looks like another one is on the way. I don't mind driving an hour to work but I'm done traveling and staying in hotels for work.

38 Safari with 330 Cat and Allison 3000 rated for 10k.I tow a full sized Ram. I don't win any speed races up inclines but that is ok fine. We enjoy the size of the RV for 2 people and it fits about anywhere. Keep in mind with this setup, your full sized truck will trail a little, meaning you can put it up on curbs etc if you are not careful. A smaller toad will not do that. I can attest having that full sized truck is very nice, you have plenty of room and an off-road rig. I fill up the bed - all that storage is a plus.

The tow ratings can be a bit of smoke and mirrors. They can play with the vehicle weight to show a higher towing capacity, but once you load up the RV the towing capacity can be reduced.

What you want is an Allison 3000MH transmission. That's what is needed to effectively pull 10,000lbs.

I was in the same boat as you a couple years ago, similar budget too. I tow my Jeep Wrangler which weighs like 5,700lbs loaded up.

The Winnebago Journey and Tiffin Allegro Red were the only two that fit the bill. The Tiffin was more expensive and harder to find.

So I purchased a '14 Winnebago Journey 36M just over two years ago. Cummins ISB 360 and Allison 3000MH. We have been all over the Country towing the Jeep, in excess of 16,000miles. I have been very happy with the rig and the towing capability. It's not the fastest but with a little driver management it has done very well. Climbed the Vail Pass, Loveland Pass, big hill by White Sands National Park, and the Tioga Pass in Yosemite. No regrets. Overall the RV has done well. Little quirky things as expected, but quality has been satisfactory and if I did it again I would probably do the same thing. The Journey is essentially the same from '14-19 too.

This is an important point. I was looking on-line at a Pace Arrow 36 foot DP Specs. Said it had a 10,000lb hitch, BUT the GVWR was 29,000lbs, and the GCWR was 33,000lbs. Looks to me like the true towing capacity would be maybe 5,000lbs, as that DP would need to weight only 23,000lb loaded to truly have 10,000lb towing capacity.

I tow an F150, 5K lbs approx, with our 2008 Endeavor. The sister ship is the Diplomat.

Ours is considered a 40 footer. Measured fiberglass front to rear it actually is 41.5 ft.

Our 2014 Tiffin Allegro Bus 37AP, fits most of your criteria, except price.

Towing capacity of 15k, 37' long, 450hp.

We love it. Great driving, and IFS really allows you to get into, and out of, some tight spaces. It handles the CO mountains well.

Look for one a little older, and you might find one in your price range.

My Newmar Ventana is 37’10” and it has a 10,000 lb. towing capacity. You might take a look at used Ventanas. Some of the 34’ models also have a 10,000 lb. towing capacity.
