Driving a Newell

My son asked me to take his 2018 Newell to a shop that could spin balance the tires on the vehicle much like was common 50 years ago. The ride is unbelievable and super quiet. The gauges are well laid out and easy to monitor. I like the power of that 600 hp engine. He had it turned up a bit so about 2200# of torque he was told. Even though it weighs 60,000#, it handled like a much smaller motorhome. I think it is the result of the active steering of the tag axle. I could whip around city street as though it was a 36' coach. For the first 50 miles, I chased the steering with many small corrections. I wasn't liking it. However, on the 90 mile return trip, it was a piece of cake once I let it do it's thing. Before long I was crowding 75 mph and feeling like it was 60. I could get used to that coach. The bad is the placement of the drivers outside mirror. Due to the corner post, only 1/3 of it is usable. Also, I did not like the engine brake coming on as soon as the power was released, but that could be reprogrammed. Another not too good thing is the 5.5 mpg average for the last 550 miles.

It was fun driving such a nice coach even if for such a short trip. I'm happy for my son and his wife and the enjoyment they get with it. Newell does know how to build a great motorhome. It's not for everyone, but was never meant to be. My Allegro Bus has some wind noise, and is not as smooth riding, but it's paid for and we are happy with it.

In the end, they do the same thing. Glad you had fun with it, they’re beautiful coaches certainly. Sitting at an rv Park last winter next to a new one we got to know those folks and sat outside gossiping quite a bit and that was a conclusion we all chuckled about. I’d have loved to drive one out of curiosity though-just to say I had.

I am soooo thankful that I probably will never have the opportunity to drive such a fine motorhome as that. After 5 years of mods and upgrades on my terra, I am very happy with it, but if I drove that Newell, even 2 miles, my happiness with my terra would evaporate faster than a drop of water on a hot side walk on a 100 degree day.

That wasn't the case with me. We really like our Bus and I love the way it drives. I have a better feel for the road with it and we just feel comfortable. It was a great experience, but the Newell does not offer us anything we need or want over what we have. The technology designed into it is way advanced from our '13 Allegro Bus, but we get there just the same. We do like the huge windows that really offer a much better view of the outside when setup for camp. As I said before, we are happy for the kids, but we are just as happy with our coach.

Too much glitz and I'm sure any repair costs would be much higher.
Then you would have to park it at the snobbier rv resorts as well and not with the trailer trash. Would not want to cook in it so you would have to go to high end restaurants all the time. Lol.

It goes out into the desert with the rest of us like we always have with our Jeeps. Dry camping for a week. It's just another hunk of steel and plastic the gets dirty, but cleans up well.

Just because you have a 600+ HP engine does not mean that you have to mash your gas at every opportunity..drive conservatively and the MPG will drastically improve..same with any rig.
Just because you have a car that can accelerate to 100 in a quarter mile does that mean that you should from stoplight to stoplight? same thing..
Just because you can doesn't mean that you must.
