Dutch Star Stairs Slippage

I have a 2004 Dutch Star, 40 ft diesel RV and am having an issue with the stairs. They extend fully out and go back in no problem, however about a week ago I've noticed that when fully out they now slip backwards on their own. It's slipping back far enough now where it's tough for my dog to get down them. So I would say they slip back a good 2 inches. I can manually pull them out with my hand but as soon as I put my foot on them, they slip back. Do you think a gear is worn? I got underneath and see no way to manually tighten them as I was thinking maybe some bolts had loosened over time but it looks like it's all metal rods and cotterpins with no real means to pull them out and tighten them. Any ideas? Thanks in advance for any suggestions you may have.

Gear box failure is a fairly common issue with the steps at this age .

Well underneath did you notice any indication of the step manufacturer ?

A few years back my steps were acting up. I unbolted the mechanism from the frame. Come to find out the bolts the held the motor to the metal mounting plate had become loose. Some worked their way out while others just loose. I went and got new bolts (screws) to hold the motor. Reattached the unit to frame and things worked great again.

Not sure thats your problem, but may be worth looking at.

A few years ago there was a recall/fix kit for the steps due to them moving back under weight.

I see ten recalls on a 2004 Dutch Star but not for the steps: https://www.nhtsa.gov/vehicle/2004/N...20STAR#recalls

Are you thinking of the Lippert Coachstep recall for a broken bolt from roughly 2015? If so, Lippert has a page on that: https://support.lci1.com/recalls-sup...chstep-15e-078

There are 3 nylon parts in the motor that wear. I've replaced them on my steps. Motor needs to come off and apart.
