E40D transmission

My E40D won't take off in drive with the O/D in the on position. Take the O/D button to off and it will pull off and shift normally without O/D. Once it gets going you can manually push in the O/D button and it will go into O/D; however, it will not down shift to passing gear when you push down on the pedal. What could be the problem?

Look for a Ford truck forum such as ford-trucks[dot]com and search for a guy named Mark Kovalsky.

He WILL know, as he's a retired Ford transmission engineer from the era that the E4OD and 4R100s were being used in new vehicles.

He was part of the team that designed 'em, and he KNOWS 'em, forwards and backwards, inside and out!

When you say it won't take off, do you mean it's in a high gear or neutral?

I'm going to need codes to diagnose this. Most likely this is an OBD-I system. With OBD-I you can get a $25 code reader or use a paper clip: http://www.troublecodes.net/ford/

I am a Transmission Rebuilder in Canada. This is a common problem with the early E4OD transmissions. The OD Sprag Assy fails and will not move in the Drive position with the OD Cancel button in normal position ( light off) with the OD cancel button depressed( light on) the Overrun Clutch pack is applied, allowing movement in Drive. Transmission has to be removed and disassembled to repair. There is an updated Sprag kit that is available from later model E4ODs that are very durable and give you years of service. Tell the rebuilder that's working on the unit to also check to make sure it's got the updated Center support with bearing to support the Forward Clutch Drum. Another common problem.

Thanks walkerfb2 for the info. If I continue to drive it using the O/D button to get it into drive for starting and then pushing the button for O/D at road speed and manually shifting when I need to downshift on hills or for passing what damage will occur? Is this a bad idea?

You should get it repaired sooner than later. The Sprag will eventually come apart, sending metal throughout your Transmission, making the repair even more costly. Metal particles get absorbed in fluid and acts like sand paper on bushings, thrust surfaces, steel and fibre clutch plates, pump, Torque Converter, etc.

Thanks for the info. I will take it to a shop right away and get it repaired. I really appreciate your help in this matter. I have had so many varied opinions and none of them have really made any sense; however, after talking to a retired transmission man and discussing your post it makes sense to just have it fixed.
