EGR valve

I have 2008 HR Scepter. This is the second time the EGR valve has stuck open.Approx. 6 months ago had the same problem. The first time I had the problem the shop took it apart and cleaned it and put it back together. It worked great but now the same thing happened. Check engine light comes on and the engine loses power. The shop suggested they can remove the valve and reprogram the engine and the problem will be solved for good. they also said the engine will have more power and better fuel mileage. Just wondering if anyone out there has a quick fix to get me back on the road for a few hundred miles.
Has anyone removed the Valve and had the engine reprogramed?

Don't know what state you're in, but I would do it.

I remember the old Chevy S10's, like early 2000's would have EGR problems and you could just unplug the EGR and it would run fine. I wonder if that would work for you.

I would e open to letting a shop reprogram it for more power and better mileage.

I have the ISL 425hp motor. I too get the CEL every so often, usually on an incline and the tranny downshifts. Seldom does the engine derate and light goes off as soon as I restart.

Using my diagnostic tool I get “out of calibration EGR valve mechanism.” I pulled the EGR valve off the motor (easy job). It was covered in soot, but didn’t look near as bad as ones I saw on YouTube. The valve was difficult to move by hand. I soaked it oven cleaner overnight and then rinsed it off. Nice and clean and I could move the valve by hand. I reinstalled and thought that fixed the problem.

Unfortunately this didn’t correct the problem. So I called Cummins and in their usual uselessness, said they would need two hours to diagnose the problem for $450 before determining what fix was needed.

So I’m not sure what I will do next. Anybody got any ideas?

I also had an EGR code on my 2008 ISB. Was able to clear it by cleaning the EGR sensor and the veins. The veins can be cleaned by pulling two plugs and using compressed air and a straight pick. The code hasn't come back in over two years.

Maybe this would work for an ISL too?

10 to 1 cummins knows exactly what is wrong with it. Find a private shop that is honest.

Exactly. They deal with their motors all day every day. They know exactly what’s the problem. Unfortunately, it’s all about the money.

Do you have any suggestions on a good shop? I’ve yet to find one.

Thanks Jim. Could you please tell what the veins are?

Sure, they could be called ports too. They supply exhaust gas to the EGR sensor. Google those terms and you should find some videos on how to clean the sensor and veins. Fairly easy procedure. Mine is an ISB Cummins though so it could be different.
