Really hard to help without a year, make and model of the rv you have or at least the make of the steps.
That said, on the Kwikee model steps. the biggest issue is the ground come loose, doesn't have a good connection, gets corroded or dirt in between the end and the chassis frame. Easy to check for the bad ground but don't crawl under the steps themselves just in case they decide to come out.
