Engine chatter

Here is a dialog of my problem. When we stop for gas, food, ect. and I turn off the engine for a short time, then get back on the road, the engine Triton V10 1999 will chatter like a diesel engine until I reach hwy speed. Once I reach speed it stops. I try not to push it hard which helps reduce the sound of chatter but wonder what could be the cause. Any ideas out there? Everything works great and plenty of power. I do tow a Toyota Prius.

Lifter noise (ticking) because of low oil or bad lifter? Valve noise (knocking), bad valve? Timing off for some reason? Exhaust leak? Hard to say based on a description of the noise. Maybe something much simpler also.

JMHO; It sounds like the engine ECM is reverting to cold start ignition timing/ fuel injector mixture program , on every start up; rather than reading the current engine temp. and running the correct program.
The cold start program , replaces the automatic choke operation of an engine with a carburetor.
Have you tried , idling the engine for about two mins. after a hot start , before trying to drive, to see if the noise isn't apparent ?

Check your exhaust manifold bolts to see how many are broken, broken bolts will tend to allow exhaust leakage until the engine warms up. You should be able to see them all looking in over the front tires.
