Engine threw a Rod or 2..need advice
Okay, My trip went from Great to worse...traveling in Texas at the moment. screaching sounds rolled to a stop along the road...Mechanic came out and inspected engine "said threw a rod though the core"..there is Oil on the ground below the engine.
Patient is a Class A Fleetwood Southwind Storm, 2000 with a gas V10 on a Ford chassis (1999).
Questions:
How much would it cost to replace with a Jasper rebuilt V10?
If replacement cost are reasonable new engine or rebuilt?
We got the motorhome at a really good price enjoy the unit, so would it be worth it?
RV Dealer install or Big Rig Truck installer?
Need Advise were staying at a Autsin TX Hotel now this happened Sat June 1st and will get the estimate from Big Rig guy on Monday afternoon June 3rd.
Need info guy's,
Thanks

Sorry to hear of your troubles.
How many miles on this engine? Do you have service history?

I hope your not asking about rebuilding your motor? A rod thru the block means a totaled motor. There will be some parts salvageable, but not much. A new motor will probably cost you 10 grand once your done and finished. A rebuilt motor maybe half that.

I had just checked the oil and it was fine about 2 hours prior to this happening...engine had run great up till the screeching sounds.....
Still need advise to the questions I posted or other questions you might think of.
Thanks for answering.

Oh now the engine cannot be rebuilt. I am thinking of getting a rebuilt engine from Jasper. The Big Rig Guy is a Jasper engine installer.
Thanks for the reply.

I would hope that the Big Rig Guy can give you estimates on costs. It's difficult for us to give you pricing on that unless someone here has had that done. If it were me, I'd probably choose to install a rebuilt engine to save a few bucks.
Sorry for your troubles and I hope they get you fixed up soon.

I would strongly warn against Jasper rebuilt engines. Both dealers I have worked at both tried Jasper and will not use them again. The engine rebuilds were very poor and the warranty on them is even worse. In many cases you will have to pay out of pocket for the extra labor needed. The seals and gaskets I have seen on them are also very poor quality. Get a Ford reman engine. The prices are very similar and they carry a 3 year unlimited mileage warranty. Any Ford dealer in the country will have to honor the warranty and you will have to pay nothing for a claim if there was an engine related failure. We have used the NAPA rebuilt engines also and they are also ok. Their warranty claims are not the best either but still better than Jasper.

Sorry to hear about your engine issue. I would believe a rebuilt Jasper engine might be your best solution.
I expect the Big Rig Truck dealer would have more knowledgeable mechanics for engine swapping. We use RV mechanics only for coach related problems, NEVER for drivetrain repairs.

If your engine is not re-buildable ; and from all accounts it's not. There will be a core charge involved, when buying a rebuilt engine. Make sure that any estimate you get includes the core charge, as that $ amount may tip the scales to new rather that rebuilt ; if new is even available.

Hi All..
I wouldn't overlook a used engine from one of the RV salvage yards around the country.. There are always some really low mileage units at these places.. And they were all running when they met their demise..
Just a suggestion.. Jaspers are good motors with warranty and all but you are gonna pay for that.
Good luck!
Ron

My brother in law here in town is a big rig guy and he uses Jasper motors all the time. Most mech. shops are jasper dealers that can do warr. work for them if needed.

Well you said that you had oil two hours prior but then had a screeching sound before it stopped. So did you have any warning lights on the dash before it went. It either over heated and seized up or it spun a bearing. Very unusual gor an engine to just throw a rod without some prior warning. I have used Jasper rebuilt engines and have never had a problem.

I would not use a RV dealer or a big rig truck garage. Most RV dealers don't do mechanic work, You don't have a big rig and you wouldn't want to pay their hourly rates! A local to you garage would be the best in my opinion. Jasper.com would give prices probably.

I agree that we probably wouldn't use an RV dealer, but I'd probably go directly to a Ford commercial truck facility for the work.
