Fault Codes SPN 641, 3216, 3226 and 5743
I was recently on a 3 month trip. A few weeks into the trip, I was leaving a campground and got check engine light. Using the Freightliner LBCU dash information panel, I got the following fault codes:
SPN 641 FMI 9 SAO
SPN 3216 " "
SPN 3226 " "
SPN 5743 " "
I googled the codes and the 641 appeared to involve the Variable Geometry Turbocharger and the 9 meant it was not serious. However, it made me nervous so I stopped at a Freightliner facility. They ran a diagnostic check and said all the faults happened at the same time. The tech said that he suspects that the VGT actuator is at vault. He said there is an active TRP (temporary repair practice) for the actuators replacement-T2145. They did not have the part in stock. He cleared the codes and said it wouldn't hurt coach to drive it. Since I was traveling with another couple, I decided to continue trip but if faults happened again, I would stop and get it repaired. I continued on my trip. Spent over 3 months on the road and drove close to 10,000 miles and the faults did not occur again. I had decided I would have Cummins look at it when I got home. However, after reading the TRP 2145, I'm wondering if they won't do anything until it goes bad. The TRP states that it's for Out of Warranty Failures. I am out of warranty but don't believe I have an actual failure. The TRP says that you must experience a Variable Turbocharger Actuator failure. Has anyone had this issue? Does it sound like I may have just had a temporary condition that triggered these faults since I drove so many miles and did not see them again? Is this a serious issue and I may be looking at a big problem if I don't do something now? Not sure what to do here and looking for some advice. Does appear that the only way Cummins will replace it is if it actually fails. Thanks for any assistance anyone can provide.
