Getting ready to change out all the Filters on my ISL 400 and Onan Generator,

Checking to see if Filter Barn is still the Go To Place?

Amazon sent me a post with reduced pricing and Filter Barn was 10-40% less.

So I'm checking with the Experts.

Where do YOU get the Best Deal???????????

I have a Cummins dealer close by. Their prices are better than Amazon and typically have parts in stock.

I purchase from a business that provides a good price and the shelf life of the filter is not expired and they meet OEM requirements or better. This sounds simple but about 50% of filters offered either do not meet OEM requirements and or have expired shelf life.

I'll bite, why would it matter if the filter is expired? Isn't it just simple filter media in most cases? I didn't know this matters.

I bought 6 in 2007 still have one left - You mean it's BAD

You think if I soak it in Oil it might come Back

Filters deteriorate with time as a result of stored temp and humidity even in a dust free area. Glues and chemicals used also deteriorate with time and conditions.
Major manufactures of filters will tell you that the shelf life of oil and air filters is 5 years and fuel/water separator filters have a 3 year limit.
I have had manufactures replace filters that were outdated by their request
as they did not want their filters in use beyond their limits.

The manufacture date normally is on the filter but in some cases on the container it came in.
The date can be the normal date or some form of date code the manufacture uses.

I have a couple of filters that were sold NEW in the box. One was 8 years old and was replaced another Allison filter pack was 11 years old, money refunded.

I use to buy my filters once a year at Quartzsite from the Spartan Filter truck. They sold only OEM filters. When I bought my new coach, I needed filters and Quartzsite was several months away. I went to my local Freightliner dealer with my VIN and they had all of my filters in stock, including hydraulic filters. The air filter, usually the most expensive item, was reasonably priced.

As stated, filters have a shelf life, especially air filters. When I had my Diplomat, I use to keep a spare air filter. I no longer do that....I buy my filters when I'm ready to use them. The only filters I keep on hand are a spare set of fuel filters, which I keep in the coach.

Just my opinion......I only use OEM filters, especially on my Onan generator. I know many will cross reference and buy the cheapest filter they can. Often, oil filers have subtle differences, like bypass valves. I'm not willing to take the chance for $2-$3 savings.

I've used filters that were many years old. Been doing this for decades. As soon as I receive them I put them in a zip lock bag or at least seal the open end in plastic. Store in my shed. Never a problem. I research and can find great buys saving me hundreds per year this way.
