Sometimes less air is truly more.........
Assuming that you're reading the inflation tables properly, I'd say that something is wrong with your tire size. The max. on the tire is usually a long way from what what's required, including an extra air cushion and more.
In fact and in a many cases, max. for a modern tire can well exceed the wheel's max. in older rigs, which should be taken into account also. I can't imagine a steel wheel exploding by exceeding max psi. Might as well just call the coroner, rather than 911.

Our Firestone Transforce are rated at 80 PSI cold, but the tire dealer recommended 60 PSI for a smoother ride; and a Bridgestone-Firestone engineer that I talked to told me that along as I stayed above 50PSI for my application, the structural integrity of the tire would not be compromised.

So far, so good..........they are pushing three years old, and will be replaced sometime in that third year; they will not be worn out, but I never let my tires go into a fourth year...................

Last time I looked, Bridgestone owns Firestone and and keeps the brands separate. I have used Bridgestone and been very pleased with theme. Like I said, I would not put a Firestone on a little red wagon.
