I choose to run at the manufacturer's recommended PSI on their published chart for the weight carried rather than add air that is not needed or desirable. They have factored in their liability safety cushion in those charts.
Sometimes less air is truly more.........

Assuming that you're reading the inflation tables properly, I'd say that something is wrong with your tire size. The max. on the tire is usually a long way from what what's required, including an extra air cushion and more.
In fact and in a many cases, max. for a modern tire can well exceed the wheel's max. in older rigs, which should be taken into account also. I can't imagine a steel wheel exploding by exceeding max psi. Might as well just call the coroner, rather than 911.
