I have spent the better part of two days researching to see if anyone has installed vinyl plank flooring over ceramic tile in their coach?
The living area in ours is carpet and the kitchen and bath area are the 6 inch tiles. I'm concerned taking out the tile. I'm not as young and spy as I used to be. Breaking it out should not be a problem but if there is a lot of mastic stuck to the floor it could turn into quite the nightmare.
My thoughts are: pull the carpet and install underlayment to bring it up to the level of the tile then just install the planking over the top. I have read that it is permissible to install the product we are looking at over tile. I realize I still have the worry about if the slide will clear the new floor.

Thoughts??

I don’t know about your coach but my Monaco the glue used to set the tile is not the same as in a house it was rubbery and would not just break away from the subfloor.

We ended up sanding the subfloor with a floor sander to get it off.

The joints and unevenness of the ceramic will telegraph through the vinyl.. I think one would need to skim coat the ceramic to make an acceptable surface for the vinyl..

I wouldn't go over the tile for a couple of reasons. Interior doors may not swing properly, but I'd be real concerned about the slides clearing the new materials. Getting all that tile out will help with overall weight as well.

I took all my kitchen tile out and it was by far the worst, dustiest, miserably single job I've done to this coach. Monaco used some sort of mastic that wasn't designed to come off easily. But if I were to do it over, I still would take it all out. Have you considered hiring a college kid to help you with the demo?

If the tile is in good shape, another option many do is remove the carpet only and butt the new vinyl flooring to the tile. They make nice transition pieces as well.

We lost over 350 lbs by having our tile removed before installing vinyl flooring which translates to more carrying capacity. We did not do it ourselves since I did not want to work around the slides.

That is what I would prefer doing IF I could find someone to do it. So far all the local folks that I have spoke to said NO!! (very loudly!)

I guess I will have to expand my search area.
