Freezing Water while Winter camping

The last several years I have winterized and parked the old Class a Winnebago Diesel for the winter because of the threat of water systems freezing up. I would like to get some advise on winter use from the full timers and snow birds on what to do about this. Is heat tape an option? Do the campgrounds even have running water in the dead of winter? Should I just go ahead and winterize it and carry extra water?

We have used our Class A pretty much every winter. Yes, most camp sites up north that are opened have water available. Buy a heated hose to access and make sure your bays are heated if you choose to try it.

But we usually just winterize in October or November and take bottled water when we travel in January or February until we get far enough south to use campground water.

You will need to check to see if the campground you want to use will have water, as some do while others do not. Many use what is called "drain back" water hydrants which do not freeze if they are off in cold weather but will freeze if left connected to the RV and open to supply water. In those cases you should fill your water tank and then put the hose away so that it doesn't freeze and cause the hydrant to freeze also.

Most likely you have heated bays for all of the tanks and plumbing in your RV so it will not be any problem as long as you keep the furnace set to a comfortable inside temperature.

I operate out of the fresh water tank and keep the fill hose in the basement until needed then fill the FW tank again.

We have spent several winters up at 7000' and use a heated water hose. The hose bib at the RV Parke has heat cable on it above ground level. I keep the water spigot on all winter and have never had a problem. The heated hose even melts any snow that falls on it.
