Fresh water tank/water pump

2021 Tiffin Allegro Red 33AA- hooked up to shore power and water. Water pressure was low so I turned on water pump to improve water pressure.

Does having the water pump on while hooked up to shore water drain water from the fresh water tank?

You don't want run the fresh water tank empty or you may damage the pump impeller. I fill my fresh tank when arriving at a campground in case water service is interrupted. Which has happened a couple of times.

When we started RVing 3 1/2 years ago we did not travel with water in the tank, now we do. We were in Alabama and had 2 nights in the 20's so I unhooked hose from water source and used from tank. I also carry an extra water pump in my spare parts bin.

Yes, but the use of the tank water is proportional to the pressures. If, for example, the pump pressure is 45 psi and the city inlet supply is 30 psi, 1/3 of the water volume comes from the tank and 2/3 from the city inlet.

Gary, most all RV's have a check valve in the water line/system, won't the higher pump pressure close that check valve and pull from the tank?
My pump is always on, hooked to shore water, auto fill fills the tank when needed. All my water comes from my tank.......unless I shut the pump off, or the city pressure is higher than my pump pressure.

Pump pressure higher then city water....city water inlet check valve will be closed

Pump can not start if city water pressure is higher than Pump Pressure switch Start set point ---typically 40 psi

RV diaphragm pumps do not require water for cooling or lubrication. They are designed to run DRY
Many folks have found their pumps on after days of running dry.....no harm/no foul

If you don't have one, this may help you spot the problem and you need one anyway. Have you tried just disconnecting and checking the pressure with the 'ol mark one eyeball ? Also the screen for the inlet can be clogged, the water diverter valve may not be in the right position. You should never have to use your water pump on street water, unless it's pathetic pressure. I've never experienced it.
