I put a little bleach in every now and then for this reason, and I do not drink the water, I brush my teeth with it, shower, wash dishes. I use purified water from jugs to drink or cook with.

(Dsigns differ ..My old coach filtered water coming out out of the tank, my current coach filters water coming *into* the tank)

Chlorine bleach is a well accepted disinfectant for water systems, and at standard maintenance levels (NOT shock or disinfectant levels) is incredibly dilute. Halfway through this last summer my water started seeming a little "off". I added 75 ml of disinfecting bleach for the 100 gal tank (which is the epa's recommended concentration for maintenance treatment and in no way interferes with clothes washing), and it made an immediate and positive difference.

Then again, we do not drink our onboard water, and i know some complain that chlorinated water makes hair "frizzy". Still, i dont hesitate to add that 75 ml a couple times a summer just to be sure the system is not growing stuff.

Boston ... i recommend you tell your wife that water systems *do* grow slime, and that *something* has to be done to treat it. The alternatives to bleach that have been mentioned are quite acceptable, bleach is just cheap, readily available, and highly effctive, and in the concentrations used (75 ml per 100 gal), not known to be a health hazard.

It goes beyond bleach or not. I have an elaborate 3 stage filtering system for our RV. Our base camp has a well but again we have a massive filtration system there. My wife and I are Berkey® fans and use them for all our drinking water. The real health threat in water isn't just things like bacteria but lead and various toxic chemicals in ground water as well. Did you know that there are certain levels of cyanide considered "acceptable" in city water?
