Our first coach was a mid door (2003 Suncruiser). Then again, most gassers are mid-door. When it came time to look at diesel pushers we initially thought we would rather have a mid door so we looked at Alpine Coach and other mid door DPs because most DPs came with the front door.
I guess what turned us from the mid door at first was the lack of suitable floor plans. The mid door takes up a chunk of wall space, right where you don't want it taken up. With a front door you don't lose as much space because you need to have foot well room for the passenger anyway so you get a nice long wall to lay out couches, recliners, kitchen counters, etc. After we thought about it we decided we'd go with the best floor plan and let the door be wherever it was.
Now that we have the front door we like it. It does help keep the middle of the coach cleaner because the dirt (and shoes that pile up) are left in the front. We initially thought that the passenger would be in the way at fuel stops and stuff but that really hasn't been an issue. When fueling the power footrest goes down and the passenger generally has something to do mid coach anyway (like go to the bathroom
). As to fitting stuff in through the door - they're all narrow. We haven't seen any difference in door location. Plus, the front door is a heavy door that's mounted near the front cap so it's solid. Our mid door wasn't as well built and the coach squirms around quite a bit in the middle so it squeaked and made more noise when driving. Now that we've had a front door, we'll stick with it on any future coaches as well. What initially looked to be a concern turned out to be a non-event. Just go with the floor plan you like best.
