Smile Fueling up in Canada

My hubby and I are taking a roadtrip through western Canada on route to Alaska. We have a 41’ Class A dp. Any recommendations on fueling up on road?

Fueling in Canada is no different than in the US. If you have an open roads card, it will work at the cardlock stations but there’s no discount.

Fuel stops may be further apart, so start looking when you reach the 1/2 tank level. Prices may be quoted in liters or imperial gallons, so brush up on your conversion arithmetic ahead of time. But otherwise its pretty much the same as the USA.

Use this app. $1.60 per liter is like you spending $4.46 for a US gallon.

Prices in Canada are per liter.

Use google map search for diesel

Be careful fueling. Last time I was there the handle was yellow for diesel and green for regular gas. I almost screwed up but a station attendant caught me just in time. I sniffed the nozzle from then on just to make sure.

Gary . I can't count the years since any fuel pump in Canada was in Imperial Gallons ( 160 floz. )

At 4.54 X the per Liter price , too many of us would have heart attacks when we saw the station signs .

To the OP; Google is you friend , if you're worried about a fuel stop check out the satellite view .
The majority of stations along major routes will be easy access.

From a Canadian. Fuel up right before you hit the border. Gas is cheaper (few cents a liter) at Costco. Download GasBuddy app. It show the price of fuel at most stations when the get update by drivers that use the app.

Once you're past a certain point in Northern BC and enter the Yukon , the fuel you're purchasing is trucked up the same highway you're traveling .
The station's cost goes up accordingly as do the pump prices , so even though the price might seem atrocious ; don't think it'll be any better 50/100 miles up the road.

The Canadian pumps measure in liters, of course, but there may be signs or brochures here and there mentioning gallon equivalents. For those who are metric-challenged. If you encounter any reference to a gallon in Canada, it will be an imperial gallon rather than US gallon [unless it explicitly says otherwise]. An Imperial gallon is about 20% larger than a US gallon and equal to 4.55 liters.

Having just returned from a couple of weeks touring around BC and Alberta there were a couple of things that I did to make it a little easier on myself as this was the first time we'd taken the trailer across the border. I stuck a little note on the console that cross referenced number of liters to fill the tank from 3/4, 1/2 and 1/4 full. All the pumps we encountered when pre-paying with a credit card wanted you to select the number of dollars to pre-authorize and having this note handy made that easy.

I also did the same thing with the height of the trailer so I could quickly reference bridge heights that are signed in meters.

My advice in rural Canada is the same as fueling in Alaska. If the station is open and has fuel, fill your tank. Don't count on the station 50 miles (75Km) away to be open or have fuel.

I don't have an Open Roads card, but travelling last year with a couple that did and they had to call customer support to get an ICC number to use in Canada.
