Definitely shut the water off at the meter. Leave faucets open so water has somewhere to go in case of freeze. We leave for a month or two at a time and take most of the precautions listed previously. If we were going to be gone any longer I would have the city turn off our water, which would also stop our trash pick up charges, etc., and any minimum payment they might require. There is often a turn-on fee, though, so weigh what you would save against what the city would charge to turn it back on. Also, our insurance company recently added an addendum to all their policies that if a house is vacant for more than 90 days, insurance coverage is adjusted. Can't remember off-hand but seems like it was cut to 50-percent of coverage. Worth looking into.

Yup, Same here.. And Long term Invested the proceeds.
Sold everything not bolted down or would not fit in the motor coach.
Then moved to SD due to NO income tax on our retirement funding.
And used the Escapees for our mail and "Legal" permanent address.

The reason for the advise is because we have no desire to sell our home. We have to many toys we use when we are home, but we want to travel months at a time.

We do appreciate all replies and suggestions.

Yeah I cant imagine selling our home, 6 cars, motorcycles, side by sides and all our junk. Wouldn't even be a consideration.

Something many don't consider is if they change their minds and need to rebuy that $200k house you bought in 1980 and sold for $700k is property tax will be outrages. We recently sold a house of 25 years and purchased a new one and taxes went from $4400 to $11000 a year and the house was less money. Luckily I exercised my one time right to transfer my property taxes after age 55

DH turns off all the ceiling fans. One of our sounded like a blow up special recently. DH installed a new one. Notify your credit card co. that you will be traveling. Ours refused to let us make a $550.00 bike purchase in our home town. They thought it was fraud. Called them and got it straightened out.

We live near Canada, very cold winters. ALL water is drained and the main shut off. House is alarmed and monitored. Someone mentioned the cost. We have "Alarm Relay" which is about $10 a month for any amount of sensors. We have had a few false alarms but the sheriff doesn't charge for going out to check on things, which I hear some areas charge for a false alarm. Big name alarm companies are a rip off. Our mail is forwarded. We have a great neighbor who will notice a light on that shouldn't be and will call us, we also learned to call and let them know we are back home. We got home one year and the neighbor noticed the lights on and showed up with his 12 ga shotgun to check on things. We store valuables in a safe in a safe giving us over 2 hours of fire protection. We have been gone for many months at a time for the last 12 years and no problems. We are very rural and in a very gun friendly area which tends to keep people honest lest they have some lead added to their diets. The biggest problem we have ever had is with the Post Office messing up the mail.
