I worked on the west coast for a component supplier to the RV industry. I spent many hours on production lines in Riverside CA, Woodburn OR, Junction City OR, Coburg OR, Yakima WA, British Columbia, Winkler Manitoba and a few smaller TT and truck camper mfrs.
As a supplier, I was aware of many cost cutting measures implemented simply to increase margin.

My only experience with a full wall slide is with a 2013 Thor. Nothing but trouble from the start and continued to be so for the 4 months I owned and it stayed in the shop attempting to repair it for 95 % of the time I owned it. When even the shop could not repair it to my satisfaction I dumped it for a loss on a trade for a 2013/14 Itasca 35F with two slides. Lost a slide problem and gained the second bathroom.

Full wall slide is more useful
Yes, the full wall slide has been around for years. Owning a 2009 Newmar Ventana (who invented the slide out) Model 3961 40 foot Diesel Pusher has been so great! The concern is not been a hot issue, per dealers and service centers I have researched about it.
The useful area the main driver's side slide out is really beneficial, from behind the driver's seat, all the way to the rear bedroom, just before the 2nd bathroom. Makes for a simple way to use, to clean and to slide out, or slide back in.
I have had many other RV owners comment upon being inside our RV how useful and roomy the full side slide out makes our unit. We just are pleased and for 10 years it has been dependable and works very well, thank you.

There's a guy near me with a Dutch Star that has a FWS. Everytime he wants to dump his tanks he has to crawl under the slide. I would think that would get old especially the older you get!

What do you think is better?
PROS:
I understand that a full wall slide provides a more interior room (on that side of Coach),
but
CONS:
it also weighs a lot more and requires a more powerful hydraulic system and would be much more difficult to push in manually if the hyd system ever failed. Also the metal framing that the house is built around would need a huge opening (so less vertical frame members) than if the Coach had two smaller slide out rooms on that side. That means less roof support on that side of the Coach.
At least that is the way I see it. Would you want a full wall slide out in your coach?
|
One more big pro for me is on one side of the coach I will not have to crawl or bend to my knees to get stuff out of the basement. Do not miss that "feature" of my four slide, DPMA.

We bought a 2014 coachmen pursuit class A with a full wall slide as our first RV. The slide is gear driven. We noticed it wasn’t closing fully at the bottom on one side which led to a complete replacement of the slide mechanism. Fortunately our extended warranty paid for all but a small deductible. Then we had leaks around the slide, leading to seal replacements. Thought it was fixed, then noticed cracks adjacent to the support rollers under the slide dripping water which led to a complete replacement of the slide floor due to waterlogged flooring. Our warranty did not pay for any of this except some of the seals. Before we took the coach home we extended the slide to inspect the repair and the slide would not retract. Had to replace both motors. At least our warranty paid for the motors. So no I would not buy another coach with a full wall slide. The tech told us the gear driven slides are crap. Live and learn.

The FWS allowed me to get a short MH that still sleeps 2 adults and 2 teens easily and feels spacious. When slide is in, bathroom is still accessible. So far, no issues with it. My thought is the more slides, the more that can go wrong. At least with mine there is only one that can go wrong.

We have a 2016 24 ft MH with a full wall slide. Our little MH is quite spacious.
But I would never get another. That side of the MH sags and the gutter is useless. Unless you’re parked on concrete, it’s so heavy it becomes unlevel.
Then a roller failed, tipped over. Almost $6000 repair bill.
The repair guy said the slide motors were fine.

I didn’t want a full wall slide, however the interior seemed larger or at least the perception, we love our four slide outs with a large center bath.

For us... We have only the single LR slide, ( sofa bed & dinette). Where we are currently parked & dry camping for the next 2 weeks or so, We DO NOT have the parking space/clearances to extend the slide.
but it is free parking..
There are No issues for us, as the only thing blocked is the china hutch, all else is fully accessible without having to make compromises. ie: full chef galley and storage pantry's , walk thru ADA bath, washer/dryer, North/South residential full sized queen true 50/50 split & fully adjustable bed, all closets.
Only repair to slide was replacing the air bladder seal after 15 years of use.
Happy Trails to All...

I have the FWS. I don’t like it. Mine is electrically powered and man it is sensitive. Everything has to be just right for it to go out problem free.

Actually you do not...on some hydraulic slide systems there is a 3rd synchronizing cylinder that equalizes the pressure. Unlike most hydraulic systems when something stops moving you immediately stop activating the control, it’s actually good to not let up on the control immediately about every 15-20 times you extend or retract the slide. Here’s HWH’s system that in my 14 years X 3 slides and now 2.5 years X 4 slides has not given any trouble.

Oh but they did:
2021 ENTEGRA COACH VISION XL 34G
One full wall slide from the entry door (behind the passenger seat) all the way to the back of the rig. It's the kitchen, W/D, and wardrobes.
(And one smaller one across from it is the dinette and theater seats.)

I have experienced being stuck 500+ miles from home with a full wall schwintek slide-out system complete failure. After each repair being a minimum of 1k. After the first failure I would almost vomit/hold my breath each time i depressed "retract slide." Each time I was delayed a day or longer, had to recruit 5-7 people, unplug synch box, remove set screws in each motor, push the motor out of the gear housing and tell everyone to push on the count of three. Gets OLD - FAST!!! I prefer four smaller slides or the larger slide hydraulic with some type of redundancy or one person manual retraction method. Lippert is NO help as they think think this mechanism is the best thing since sliced bread. It might work well on a 4-8 foot slide but after that it just cannot handle the weight.
