Gas Cummins Onan 5500 generator

Just bought a used Motorhome. (2009 Georgetown 379).

Drove it about 1500 miles home. The generator worked great while parked.

If i left it running when i started driving it would shut off.

It also will either not start while driving, or if it does start, it usually will not stay running for very long?

Every time this happened i had well over a 1/2 tank of gas, most times it was near full.

Any idea why itís not running while driving?

It was very hot the last few days, which is why i wanted to run it occasionally while driving.

Thanks

What is the error code? Refer to your manual, as there is a code that will flash on the start switch on the Jenny. That can point you in the right direction. We had the same issue, the code was 36, and a new fuel pump was the answer.

I had the same problem a year or two ago, and replacing the fuel pump fixed it. If you haven't already done so, I would also change the fuel filter. Some of them I understand have two filters, but mine only had one. Also check the air filter and oil level and age.
Hope you get it going.

Iím not sure where to find an error code. But it was low on oil so oil was added. Hopefully thatíll do the trick?

If it was low on oil I suspect it could be that when you drove, oil move off of a level and basically told the gen it was too low to safely run, therefore shutting the gen down. I could be wrong but I think if the oil is too low it will shut down on those.

That being said, replacing the fuel pump, filter and air filter would be a good idea regardless. Just did that and more on mine.

Check the generator ground to your Chassis. Found mine was loose 2 years ago and genny had the same issues. Tightened it up with a drop of Loctite and haven't had any issues since. Good luck.

Same happened to me with an old National Dolphin. Gen wouldn't start at all. On my test drive I noticed only an 1/8th tank of fuel. Stopped and added fuel. Gen fired right up but stalled when applying the brake. Checked oil and it was low. Got a smokin great deal because the used car lot did'nt know about low fuel or oil shut down.

Hi All,

My Onan 5500 on a 2005 Winnibago Voyage starts everytime and runs around 5-10min and shuts off with a 36 code. I replaced fuel filter, oil filter, oil and it continues to happen.

The fuel pump seems to prime fine when pressing the stop/prime button.

Would the fuel pump being faulty be a part to change even though it can run for 5+ Min?

Yes, the fuel pump can fail after it heats up. I had to replace the one on our Onan 5500. Find the part number on the pump and search Amazon for Airtex pumps. They are the OEM for Onan on these generators.
