Running and no electricity

Had that problem and tracked it to my voltage regulator pod. Dropped genny, pulled the top cover, replaced and adjusted the pod and all was well. Found replacement on EBay for $100 shipped. Quiet Guard 4000 gas genny 800 hours at time of failure.

If generator is running it is producing power. Breakers or transfer switch. You can check voltage at breaker but gen has an AC breaker that won’t close without AC.

check voltage regulator. Generator will run but won't put out power.

FYI, 1700hrs is just getting broken in. Mine has 4750hrs. I've put about 3500hrs on it in a bit under 3yrs. Just keep up the maintenance and it should run a looong time.

In the attached photo, is it possible to explain the current flow from the generator to the house. I am still having trouble getting power from the generator. Traveling without air conditioning in +100* weather is not good for us.Click image for larger version

One of the sets of wires on the right side of that picture is input from the generator, the other is shore power. My guess would be top right is shore power, however that is a guess.

Get a voltmeter and check that you have 120volts between the neutral wire (white usually) and the two hot wires, Black and Red on the right side top/or bottom contactor, on both the right side of that contactor and left side. Then check the contactor on the left side of the box for the same. Do this with the RV unplugged from shore power and the generator on.

Its a good chance that the shore power wires are rubber coated and the top wires look like that.

The way it works is when shore power is sensed, the top relay closes, sending the power thru the relay and out the wires on the left side to the main breaker box.

When generator power is sensed, a 30 second delay is counted down, and then the top relay opens and the lower relay closes. You can see that the power from the lower relay comes out on the left side and goes up, thru the short jumpers, to the same terminals that feed the main breaker box.

There is a mechanical interlock preventing both relays from closing.

Thanks to all who contributed. It has been a difficult road, but think the problem has been resolved. The 45amp breaker on the generator was intermittently working which made it difficult to find. Awaiting the arrival of a new breaker, so will pray that is the only problem to be resolved.

Follow up. After pulling the breaker I found it full of sand. Not sure where it came from, but I will certainly be more thorough in my cleaning!

Russ, thanks for the update and for filling us in on the sand trap.

Safe travels and good luck to you both.

A gentle reminder to show your gas generators some love and switch them off when traveling on dusty dirt roads like in many campgrounds when finding or moving into a site. The air cooled units will ingest all that nasty stuff and it wont take long to do some damage.
