Having tires installed

I stopped in at Camping World to price getting my tires replaced and the tire prices they quoted were more than I can get them elsewhere. They told me if I don't buy them there they wont install them. Is that normal?

I would bet that it is an individual store policy. There are quite a few "road" businesses that would be more than happy to install them. They do it on the road everyday. Why not just let your dealer install them? If your tires are serviceable then I would select a dealer and best price where they can be balanced and mounted properly.

Most any tire shop can, (and will), mount and balance tires, (no matter where you bought them).
I bought my last set of 6 tires at Sam's Club and had them mounted and balanced at a tire dealer.

BTW, why anyone goes to CW for anything escapes me, (unless they have money to burn and don't mind shoddy workmanship).

Sounds like a little financial hostage taking to me. They will still charge to mount and balance even if you do buy the tires there...I wonder if corporate knows about this 'service policy' of turning down business?

This is not a CW exclusive. I know here Parkhouse Tire will not mount any tires at their shops if you did not buy them there. You can however call their mobile tire service and they will come out, but their labor rate is $175 an hour, minimum 1 hour.
Personally, I would buy the tires from the same place that mounts them. CW is not on my list as a place to buy tires.

I think you would be doing yourself a favor by locating a good commercial tire dealer in your area. Whatever brand tires you purchase, they'll do a much better job of mounting and balancing for you.

Last year I got a set (6) Michelin 295/80R22.5 through FMCA and had them installed at a real tire shop that works with FMCA. I did everything through FMCA and paid the shop for dismount-mount-valve stem recondition-balance front tires. Work out well for me.

Unless things have changed drastically in the last 4-5 years, RV stores, online sellers and Walmart are still less expensive places to buy accessories and "fun" stuff for RVS.Mel

If you are installing 19.5 tires on steel rims, I would advise you to install long valve stems and do away with the leak prone extender hoses.

Mel, CW does (sometimes) have better sale prices on the internet on some items (notice how I'm limiting this...some...and some...lol). But there have been times when CW has the best price, not always, but sometimes. I shop a lot via the internet though. The staff at the CW in Fort Worth are very helpful and also good at problem solving as well. They are good folks.

Mostly CW carries almost everything one needs in one place, and if you are in one, you can't help buy something. Like being in Walmart and just buying a gallon of milk or a roll of paper towels, you just can't get out of the store with just one thing.



Also, our Fort Worth CW has a good service team and they backed up their work, a few years ago I had the door entry window fixed at CW, didn't hold longer than a few months, took it back, and they warranty replaced the entire unit for no charge. Also had them do miscellaneous stuff odds and ends and been real happy with their pricing and work. But, that's just here at the Fort Worth store I'm familiar with.

Back to the OP:

I remember a Ford Dealer back in rural Ks that said if you didn't buy the car there, they wouldn't service it there. That was decades ago and I know its up to the individual franchised store, but that's NOT a good policy for sure. I wouldn't hesitate to escalate that up the corporate CW ladder.

Mel, I actually haven't been inside a CW for years. The closest one is 1.5 hrs away. I do the majority of my shopping for accessories and toys online including at CW.com. I've never considered them an option for service other than the installation or maintenance of accessories, appliances, etc. that you buy from them. For chassis, mechanical, tires, etc. I would go to others.

I disagree with the fact that they should install parts purchased elsewhere.

Every bring a steak to a restaurant to have it cooked?

Same concept, if you want they service you have to pay the price.

If you want to be your own chef buy your steak at the butcher shop and cook it yourself.

Never seen anyone complain about the price of a steak in a restaurant.

Why is this any different.

These companies invest Many thousands of dollars in equipment to be able to mount and balance tires, then pay employees wages, taxes, insurance, rent, electricity, heat and hot water.

They have to mount and balance hundreds of tires before they make enough just to cover the cost of the machine never mind the overhead.

What do you think is left at the end of the day with Just Labor, I can tell you for a fact it is in the Negative numbers.

They need the whole package or it doesn't make good business sense.

Also you get the satisfaction of knowing they will stand behind the tires and the service, One Stop Shopping.
