Headers?

Thinking about putting a set of headers on my 2000 32' Holiday Rambler Ford V-10,my exhaust bolts are broken and the manifolds have to come off anyways. My plan is to get a Five Star tune and put a set of headers on and delete the catalytic converter. I tow an enclosed trailer so more power will help.

My question is which header to put on? Doug Thorleys are $850 and Banks are $1150 I don't mind paying the extra money if they are worth it. The difference I see is in the thickness of the flange 3/8ths (Thorleys) to 5/8ths (Banks)

Thanks in advance

Headers?

Not sure on the Ford version, but the Workhorse version of the Banks is bolt in whereas the Thorley headers require some cutting. May want to check this. Also, again on the Workhorse version, the front O2 sensors are farther back and not at the same distance from the head. 5Star may be able to answer questions about the O2 sensors and affect on tuning. Might also want to check material (type of stainless) and thickness.

The biggest problems with most headers is the flanges warping. Then the gaskets blow out. The thicker the flange the less chance of warping the flange. I would personally go with the Banks, pricey, but quality products.

I have the Thorley header system and they are from the heads to the converter that replaces the Ford "Y" that is restrictive. I have had them for over 4 years with no problems. They were very easy to install. I had 2 sets of Ford Shorty Racing headers and they had more power, but, they do not last because of the unequal length tubes, with one short-side tube, straight tube that does crack because of uneven heating and cooling in that tube.

The Thorley did not require any modifications, and were Ceramic coated. They are Tri-Y configuration and add torque lower in the RPM range.

Will this require a dummy O2 sensor to keep the catalyst efficiency code (P0420) from being thrown?

I had the Thorley Tr-Y headers on my previous V-10 coach. The held up fine for the 5 years I owned it. Make sure you get the ceramic coated ones. We are in California so we had to leave the converters and sensors in place.

There isn't a sensor post Cat so it won't throw a code.

+1 not in that year range.

Banks will make much heftier flanges and gaskets.

I put banks power pack with headers on my 2004 v10 and drove 10 years. Never had a leak, easy to install, never had to re tighten any bolts

You don't have smog inspections where you live?

I don't believe smog inspections on RV's required in Colorado. With that said the Headers and cat back exhaust from Banks would likely not triggered a fail.

In the 13 years I owned it I never was required to get it inspected.

Headers alone would not prompt a bad test to my knowledge anyway.
