Heat pump not heating

I need a little help, i have a Winnebago Journey 39Z, 2008, it has a central air/heat pump. the heat has quit, does not matter if it is cold outside, will not heat on a 55 degree day. It will run for 15 minutes or so and then "DIFFERS" to the gas system which works fine. The AC also is working fine. any help greatly appreciated, thanks

If there is more than a 3 degree difference in room temp. and the thermostat temp setting, your system will go to the propane furnace for heating. So say your thermostat for the motorhome shows the room temp to be 60 degrees and you set the thermostat to 70 degrees, and have the thermostat set for elec heat, the heat pump will come on for a few minutes and then switch over to propane heat because the temp. difference is more that 3 degrees. The only way to not have this happen is to raise your thermostat setting about 3-4 degrees at a time.
Be aware also that the heat pump heat is not effective once the outside temp drops below 45-50 degrees.
We use small electric heaters, when the outside temp isn't below freezing, so we can use the parks power rather than using our propane.

Steve gave an excellent explanation. We also use electric space heaters instead of even attempting to use the heat pump function. Even though you're still using the "park's power" using the air conditioner's heat pump function, we want to save the wear-and-tear on the A/C system. RV heat pumps (heat pumps in general) are so inefficient and as mentioned are not only finicky but work only within a certain range of ambient temperature. Therefore, we also use electric space heaters and the furnace when necessary.
