Happened to see an ad today for port-homes in Florida. The concept is new to me but sounds interesting since DW is already retired and I'm considering retirement in 2 years. Apparently there are communities in Florida that have small single family homes with huge RV garages or car ports for parking your RV.

Does anyone know of a comprehensive site/forum/... that will show where some of these are Pa, DC, Ca, Nv, Fl... so one can browse the various options, I looked at Zillow real quick, but no check box for RV garage..

Just wondering

AZ and other areas have the same setup. Almost bought a lot in Yuma black in 2004 and had one built.

Are many in FL, AZ and TX. I see ads for them in the classifieds of magazines such as Motorhome. Of course you can also add one to any house where the zoning permits. We are just now completing a motorhome garage next to our existing house. If interested in that concept there is a thread on the Class A forum called Show Us Your Motorhome Garage.

Google is your friend. Just Google (or Bing or Yahoo) 'rv port homes' and you will find many. If you are interested in a particular area, append that to the search, e.g. 'rv port homes new mexico'

Here's one in Fort Mohave, AZ (opposite Laughlin, NV on the Colorado River).

Arizona RV Homes is Valley View @ Sunrise Hills - Custom Built Arizona Houses with Large RV Garges

We nearly built one with them, but ended up buying a larger home with RV garage nearby.

Why not travel around first and try out different cities or states before buying anything?

We're in a similar situation... I'm retired and working again waiting for the DW, who plans to retire between 5 & 7 years from now. Last October, we drove a large southeastern circle touring The Great Outdoors in Florida (http://www.tgoresort.com/), Lake Weir in Florida (Lake Weir Living : Marion County, Central Florida, FL.), and The Gardens in Tennessee (The Gardens | The Place for the RV Lifestyle). We totally fell in love with The Gardens, and can't wait to go... the internet pictures don't do it any justice!

Looking at the ones mentioned, I would choose the Tennessee location. I have lived in Central Florida for over 20+ years.

Ride my motorcycle all around Lake Weir. Nice riding (outskirts of Marion County areas).

Not too keen on the Great Outdoor location unless you like a quick route to 95 to head North or South, and like the ocean, which I do, but want a change. You could even probably step out your door and see the shuttles fly off from Cape Canaveral, but I have seen enough of that.

The Gardens in Tennessee interests me more for new locations, nice motorcycle riding roads, cooler weather, but still comfortable, etc. etc. Income tax free state to boot. Wonder what HOA yearly fees are.

Come on winning LOTTO numbers!!!!!!

We are in the midst of building our Coach Mahal attaching it to our existing 3 car detached garage with apartment over it. We have considered RV home port communities one day when we retire but we love our current location. It's hard to be more central located to the eastern US than Atlanta.
Our house is way too big for us now and it will continue to seem larger as years pass. As it is, I only go in the basement twice a year. Once to turn off the water to the back deck for winter and once to turn it back on.
We have actually kicked around the idea of tearing down our current house and building a smaller one story house better suited for us. We would already have the Coach Mahal, the 3 car garage for my classic trucks and our toys and we already have our pool.

I've taken a peek online at The Gardens. It does look really nice.

We own a lot in the Gardens, and the HOA fees are on their website

Gardens RV Village Homeowners Association :: Budgets

Base is $430/year for just the HOA, plus multiple options (if you desire) for lot maintenance. Very reasonable (of course it's not a resort community with lots of recreational amenities, so you don't have to pay for pools, tennis courts, etc. and being RVers, why pay for something you're not around to use?)

We've been working on the home design process for quite some time. Still not quite there as we're trying to bring the cost down. For reference, the 2 higher priced resales on their website probably cost close to what they're asking as a sales price to build.
