Hooking to shore power

I wanted 30 amp power at home to plug rv into. I used a 240 two pole 30 amp breaker and when I plugged rv into it it tripped house breaker and later found two breakers tripped on rv. Rather than take a chance I just plugged into 20 amp plug and could only use one ac. Should this have been a 120 single pole breaker 30 amp?

YES, 30 amp RV is 120 VAC

Your 30 amp house is 240 VAC and can "let the smoke out" of your RV appliances!

ONE hot, one neutral and one ground for an RV 30 amp outlet.

You need to pay attention to the outlet you installed.

If you installed a TT 30 amp outlet, it's marked 120 volts and has L, N, and G terminals.

Even if you ran 240 volts to the outlet box, there was no place for L2 to connect.

30 amp plug is 120v. You may have caused lots of damage if you wired it as 240.

Yikes!!! The OP wired up like a 240V dryer.

OP, see attached...left side is RV 120V, right side is dryer 240V. If you have no damaged electronics consider yourself very lucky.

You will need a single-pole 30A breaker.

Shore power

Thanks for help. I used right plug but wired 120 to each leg. Guardian Angel was looking out for me and breaker tripped. No damage. Going to hardware to get right breaker and etc.

Glad to hear nothing was damaged, I have heard of cases where an electrician made the same mistake and lots of damage resulted.

One thing to consider is installing an EMS that checks that the wiring is kosher, and all of the voltages and frequencies are safe before connecting. , progressive industries is a popular choice.

Double check everything in the RV, when people do this they almost always fry something, and chances are you have also or else the breaker should not have tripped, that is unless something else is miswired..
