Hot Exhaust On Differential

For anyone that has not seen my current thread on the driveshaft issue, we hit some road debris that tore off the exhaust tailpipe and did major damage to the drive shaft. After 4 days the driveshaft has been replaced and we drove over 200 miles today and so far, no issues. However, the tailpipe is still gone since the repair shop does not do exhaust work. We still have another 600 miles to go and no place to fix the exhaust so we need to drive it without the tailpipe. With the tailpipe gone the exhaust is pointing at the differential about 3 feet in front of it. So I'm wondering if there might be a problem with hot exhaust blowing at the differential even at 3 feet away? For those that might be concerned, there is no exhaust coming in the coach. Chuck

That might result in shortened diff. oil life, I would replace it after the exh. tail-pipe is replaced. Can you add a down-turned tailpipe end onto the muffler?


Some towns have specialty muffler shops, try to locate one and have a new tail-pipe made to fit.

Don't you have an IR temperature reader on board? If not, get one at Tractor supply and shoot the axles on either side of the punkin. If no great difference, no problem. Axles don't have oil coolers. I'd be more worried about hot brake fluid as the lines are often mounted on the axle. Get a heat gun reader.

A lot of hot rod cars run without tailpipes. I have run my hot rod Impala with the mufflers pointing at the rear end for almost 20 years now. It's a convertible so I only get gassed if I put the top up, which is almost never. I wouldn't stress over it too much and just fix it when you get a good chance.

This does sit forward of the differential by at least 3 feet so it's not like it is right against it. I would think that the airflow would reduce the temp on the differential housing somewhat. I do plan to replace the tailpipe but not until we get back home to Florida. So that will means driving it about 1200 miles like this. Differential fluid will get changed when we get back too. Chuck

Bush Fix......Go to Home Depot or Lowes and get some A/C ducting in the same/similar size and attach it so it points away from the rear end. Use some self-tapping screws to attach it to the exhaust pipe.

That's a thought but I will have to see if there is anything like that in 3 inch. I was thinking about an exhaust extension with a downturn. Chuck.

Try looking for a gas water heater/dryer exhaust elbow.

Thanks. I think I have found one at a Lowes near our next destination. This looks like a quick fix until we can get home and get it in the shop. Chuck

I doubt if the housing will be more than a few degrees warmer if the exhaust is 3 feet away. There will be a lot of air mixing with it as you go down the road.

Drove over 120 miles today and stopped at a Rest Stop. I took an IR reading on the housing. It was 215 degrees right around the U-Joint and less on the rest of the housing. I took a second reading after 225 miles and the reading was the same. I suspect this is not unusual for a fully loaded 34-foot motor home towing a car. I still plan to put either a turndown or 90 degree when we get to our destination tomorrow. Chuck

With the air draft blowing underneath while moving it won't be a concern at all. And at idle still not a concern. No load at idle.
