If I just need a break from driving, maybe air the dog or to have lunch, stoping at historical markers are a good break sometimes, if it is a large one. Some have lots of parking space and picnic tables. I also look for local picnic areas for a short break.
Cabela's will also let you overnight in their parking lot. Love's truck stops are a good overnight spot. Although they have lots of trucks, sometimes they have dedicated RV spots, usually out front by the gas pumps. A little noisy at night, but you got 24 hour coffee, food and restrooms. I have solar and a inverter in my TT, so I have limited power when boondocking.

We avoid interstates when on our summer long trips, so if we can't find a suitable Wal-Mart, Cracker Barrel, Cabelas, etc, I look for where the DOT temporarily park their road maintenance equipment. This is not a viable option in the less free states (NY, NJ, MA, IL, etc.) We usually use this option 2 or 3 times offer a summers trip as we just trundle along looking to explore what interests us. When exploring we try to be off the road, in a site before 3pm. Overnites can turn into week long stays if we find the location interests us.

Iexit
We love the app IExit. We would hate to travel without it. It’s location based and you can search each exit going forward and back. (Includes rest stops). The beauty of it is it tells you which way to turn and how far from the exit it is. Also list phone numbers if you need to call ahead to see if the place (restaurants...etc has space oldie RVs. You can search by type of stops gas, restaurants or whatever or you can search by name. We use it all the time to find a specific restaurant.

We always use:
www.overnightrvparking.com
It has rest area, empty lots, Walmarts, any place that any of the users have experienced. There is a yearly charge of $25 if I remember right but we rarely have to pay because if you confirm a site you stay in he gives you a free week or two on your membership renewal date. In 7 years we have paid twice I think. If we used it more wed never have to pay.
Each location has a lot of information too.

I don't know about other states, but OR has "chain up areas" that are not used for their designated purpose during summer for obvious reasons. We used one of these to overnight this summer on our way home from Winnemucca, NV to Medford, OR along Hwy 140. In addition to being convenient, the view out the window was beautiful.
I remember one night we spent at a small wayside along a rural road in TX. When we pulled in there was no one else there and a family of Peccaries was having dinner under some trees close enough for us to watch them, which we did. There is something to be said for out of the way places.
I also remember spending a night or two, as out of the way as we could be, at boat ramps. For us it has been a very mixed bag of places used to overnight, sometimes along a freeway, and sometimes along a rural road. We have thoroughly enjoyed it all.

We use a book called Rest Area Guide that we purchased from Amazon and have found in invaluable.
It lists all the rest areas on all the interstates and details the services they offer. Did you know they have RV parking with 30amp power, dump stations and water at most the rest areas on the Ohio Turnpike? we didn't until we were traveling there and checked the RA Guide. Very handy if you are just rolling through and need to stop for the night.
The rest area guide also list all the rules for each state and gives phone numbers for various services. I think it was $10-12 and well worth it.

Likewise on I39 from the Illinois border down to bloomington illinois, even though it is farm country, there are few rest areas, few truck stops, and the exit ramps are not the straight through type (there is a median that forces you to turn either right or left (and the ramps are marked “no parking anytime”. And on I49 in missouri, the ramps are likewise marked “no parking”. If i hit stretches where i know the options to pull over are few, i premptively take advantage of stop opportunities (even if i dont “have” to ... and drink less coffee [emoji4]. (A lot of the big western states are great - they have lots of “truck parking areas”. No resources, but big unpaved spaces to pull off the road for a few minutes...)

In the Texas Panhandle, there are exits that are on dirt roads called "section roads". These are county maintained dirt roads around every section of land. (1 square mile) If they are caliche roads, they are all-weather surface roads that can go by a farm. Paved roads marked FM plus the number are rural roads that have section roads that turn off of them. You can get around these roads easily and find entrances to roads, fields or farms to turn around in. FM marked roads often provide a rural short cut to somewhere else. They are maintained by the State Hwy. Dept. and are paved. For those that like to take the "Scenic route", they are wonderful.

I use an app called TruckMap it lists all truck parking, fuel stops, rest areas, weight stations and grocery stores on my route. I use it to plan our break stops and overnight stops. I try to pick Walmart for over night, the app also shows the number of spots for overnight

The best on is my co-pilot, my wife. Aside from her, we use the Good sam RV park book available at Camping World, State Trailer, & most RV dealers. In apps, Park Advisor, and since I live in AZ, there is a state park app that shoots me an e-mail touting their parks, camping, hiking trails and attractions monthly. Very well worth it. Word of mouth from camp ground fireside chats is excellent, too.

I have a question about Walmart and Cracker Barrel parking. I've been to many Walmarts and Cracker Barrels in my car where there was no way I could navigate my rig towing into.
How do you know you'll be able to get in? I've seen some where there is a less obvious entrance that the trucks use, but I only see those once I'm in the parking lot and that's too late.
