Since my barn won't fit the RV, and we live in Michigan where it snows, if truly storing the RV it is best to have slides in so the snow load isn't on the slide covers which can leak in when it melts.

But, so far, I have been tinkering non stop so they have been generally out.

Slides in when stored on the side of our house. Seems like a tighter seal. Maybe. But, we have been camping for a week with torrential downpours and have never had a problem. More room to get other motorized toys around it. When prepping for a trip, the slides come out.

In when stored, so that your slide out covers are not exposed to sun which will damage them gradually or wind which can damage them in an instant.
