Howard Precision Steer Wheel Control

I have the Howard system on my 03 Monaco Camelot and the cylinder is leaking. Has anyone found a replacement? And where? Or a work around? I am traveling and currently in Maine. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
J J Tucker

There is a search function for IRV2, look in the upper header. Do a search for the Howard Control System

Unfortunately there is not much information out there and appears that most of parts are obsolete, but you may get lucky.

Here is a link to a complete manual that might be of some help.

If your cylinder is leaking chances are it is just the gland rod seals that are bad. The gland seals usually consist of Oring and wiper type seals. Pretty simple design. A lot of times these are common sizes and a good repair shop could possibly rebuild, as long as there is no internal damage. The cylinder will have to be removed and disassembled to repair.

Hi ! Welcome to IRV2! We're sure glad you joined us!

I wonder it that's something that a shop specializing in hydraulics might be able to help with? Of course talking them into working on it might be another story!

Good luck, happy trails, and God bless!

You don't need a replacement cylinder. Take the cylinder off and then take it to any industrial hydraulic supply. They will have a shop that can rebuild it for you. Make sure to get photos and measurements of the exact cylinder placement and make sure the re-install is in exactly the same place. Positioning the cylinder can effect how the system works.

I had a Howard Power Center on our old Beaver and sure wish I had taken it off when we sold the coach and installed it on our present Monaco.

I had the "Howard Power Center Steering" system on a 96 Discovery. It was the best steering assist I have ever owned. Absolutely the best on a crowned road or a 30+ mph crosswind. Any good hydraulic service shop will be able to rebuild it to like new or replace it.
