What transmission do you have? If you don't have the Allison 3000, there is not much you can do.

OP has a Tiffin RED 36'. Do they use a 2500 for a DP?

The 1000, 2100 and 2500 are rated for a max of 300 hp and 780 Ft lbs. according to the Allison site.

We just had our 340 Cummins isb 6.7 at Freightliner for some warranty work.
I asked them to check it for an upgrade to 360HP, it was 500 for the download and a couple hours labor.
I am happy it is factory so no warranty issues. it does have the Allison 6 speed.

You would be better off upping the horsepower instead of the torque. You do that by spinning the engine faster. Reset the max governed speed up a couple hundred RPM and you've got more HP without changing the torque.

Mr. D,
I question your rating on the 2500. The website still shows 700# max torque and 340 hp for motorhome duty. I spoke with a Tiffin Red owner several months ago who had increased the ratings on his 340 ISB to 350/800. His 2500 transmission was now surging (his description) on him. When I explained the 2500 limitations as had been advised to me by Allison he then decided he should reverse his decision.

TwoGypsies,

If you have the 3000 series Allison you will have no issue doing an upgrade. If you have the 2500 series you will void your Allison warranty. I would suggest checking with Allison (in Ridgefield WA just off I5) prior to making any changes. Just my $ .02.

Check warranties before have any upgrade done. Freightliner will charge you $$ for doing a software "upgrade" that will give you so little additional performance you will hardly feel it. But it's your money.

Maybe, but you can't have one without the other. Horsepower = Torque x RPMS/5252, so if you have more torque at any given rpm, you also have more horsepower. Increasing the peak torque doesn't necessarily improve engine performance at all if that peak occurs at a different rpm than previously.

Torque changes with engine RPM and doesn't continuously increase as rpms go up. You get more horsepower if the torque stays roughly the same as rpms increase (see formula above). If the torque goes down as rpms increase (which is typical once the peak is reached), you may actually lose power. That's why torque and horsepower are normally shown as a graph that plots both vs rpm. Peak values are largely just advertising numbers, accurate but often not of great meaning in practical performance terms.

Not sure why I'm bothering to try to explain this. Half won't believe it and the other half won't care.
