HWH Fluid

Can anyone tell me if using dexron transmission fluid in the HWH system will work or not.

Yes you can use it but...................
Dexron is red and the hydraulic fluid HWH uses is clear. This only matters if you have a leak as the red dye will stain whatever it gets on.

You can get plain hydraulic fluid at parts stores that is of the clear variety

HWH doesn’t recommend hydraulic fluid as it’s a heavier weight.

Yes. That's what it calls for in the manual. Do you have a User manual? If not, go to your MH's website and download one.

And DO NOT use hydraulic fluid.

BTW...do yourself and us a favor by putting your MH and Toad information into your signature
This will really help in all your future posts, so you won't have to type it in each time.
You do this by:
1) Going to the top of this page and click the top left tab named “User CP”
2) Look at the menu on the left and scroll down to “Settings & Options” and click “Edit Signature”
3) In that text box type all the information about your MH, Year, model, length, mileage, any aftermarket extras installed, your toad and so on. You’ll be limited to 3 lines unless you become a IRV2 supporter.
Consider signing up and becoming a IRV2 supporter. It’s a small way to give back to what we all reap here.

Interesting. Seeing as how I was there this summer having a leak repaired and they topped off my system from a bucket that said "hydraulic fluid".

Here is a quote from their website

"43. What kind of fluid should I use in my system? The use of HWH Specialty Hydraulic Oil is recommended but Dexron or multipurpose transmission fluids can be used if necessary. DO NOT use hydraulic jack oil, brake fluid, or power steering fluid."

Good advice Steve. Instead of using what someone said is OK, all one has to do is read their owners manual or the HWH FAQ page.
For instance, my HWH owners manual (1999) includes type A transmission fluid. It is not listed for more recent systems.

The HWH brand hydraulic fluid is a much “lighter” oil than commercial hydraulic fluids.

Here's what it says right out of the manual:
Hydraulic Fluid Recommendation
Dexron® II or Mercon® automatic
transmission fluid is recommended for use in
your Leveling System.
DO NOT USE brake fluid or hydraulic jack
oil, which can damage the seals and cause leaks.

the standard hwh specialty fluid is dexron without the red color. it is a conoco product.
the low temp hwh fluid is a lighter hydraulic fluid, so that it flows in very cold weather.
its pourable at temps well beyond 25 below.

Always nice to get the straight scoop; thanks Paul.

Which made me think...I recently have seen a couple posts about HWH jacks/slides not operating in cold temps, but then working fine once it warmed up...I wonder if those systems have had regular hydraulic fluid added, rather than Dex or HWH?
