Hydraulic Oil Dip Stick Fell in Reservoir

1998 Dutch Star DP on Spartan Chassis hydraulic Dip Stick fell in the reservoir tank. Unsuccessful fishing out with pencil magnet! Trying to avoid removing top of canister. Leaving for vacation Tuesday while kids are on spring break. Tight on time. Any recommendations ideas, video, temporary fix appreciate.

I have lost at least 2 in my tank over the years.

It has not caused any problems whatsoever.

This tank is not pressurized and the design of the cap/dipstick makes it difficult to tighten. I just make sure mine is not loose as part of my pre-flight check.

When the first one let go right before a trip, I just used aluminum foil to cover the opening and did not lose a drop.

You can get a replacement from Spartan Fed-X Priority One and be on your way.

Hope your trip goes well.

I don't recall, but the important issue is:

Is the dipstick on the outside (suction side) of the filter or the inside (clean fluid going to pump side).

IF on the outside (my assumption, but need to VERIFY) this is not a critical issue.

But, if on the inside where it could restrict flow to the pump, you do need to address it.

Yes you need to remove the lid-- no big deal. new gasket and two bolts.
May be a good time to change filters and refill reservoir with fresh oil.

Not a big deal, take the top off and fish it out. Did the same thing.

If you see hyd. oil in the sight glass when oil is cold, the level is adequate. I would not attempt to remove the top without a new gasket in-hand given your time schedule. The 2 stacked filters are held on with a nut.

Yesterday I used a vice grip to indent the threads some on the screw holding this dipstick so it cannot unscrew accidentally.
