Idling while refueling Diesel pushers

I am just curious how many keep their diesel pushers running while refueling at a fuel stop or while taking a bathroom break and stretching your legs at rest areas. IF not why? This is assuming someone is around to "guard" your DP while it is running.

I always shut it down. Probably more out of habit then anything else.

Always shut down. Made sure I gave a minute or three of gentle running after coming down off highway.

Besides the "Shut Off engine while refueling" sign, you will notice that most truckers shut down as idling burns fuel which costs them money.

If I have any reason to leave it running, I'll go to high idle. Normally, I just shut it down.

for the most part I have likely just left the highway and I'm not convinced that everything has had enough time to cool down when I get to the pumps so I let her idle for the time it take to re fuel, typically we fuel up at the end of the day and are likely parking for the night so a few extra minutes of idling to make sure everything cools down and oil keep flowing while that happens cant hurt

Especially important for DEF engines.

I agree with alpha99, DEF engines, like MaxxForce and Super Duty, don't like idiling especially the 2010-2013 ones that I have been around.

Cummins says to let their engines idle 3-5 minutes after immediately exiting an interstate or heavy pulling. I don't know anyone who can exit a freeway/interstate, drive to a fuel station, pull up to a fuel pump, stop, and remove their seatbelt in less time than that.
I shut my engine off.

We are used to gasoline engines so we always shut down all engines for safety. Tho now we have a DP, we still shut it down while fueling.

The cool down period after exiting an interstate is just to give the turbo time to wind down and cool a bit. The 500 yards or so to the fuel pump (unless you are racing to get there) would be enough of a cool-down period for you. Now... if you had just finished a long, hard climb, I might want to give it a few extra minutes to cool down before shutting off.

We shut down at the pumps, too.

More cooling cycles for exhaust manifold, more starter cycles, and more engine starts with no oil pressure...let her run!
