Insurance vs RV-repair Hourly Rate

Ouch. I damaged my RV's rear cap (fiberglass) and its repair will include multi-paint-colors painting. I've just learned that GoodSam (NGIC) insurance will not pay the hourly labor-rate here in the DC metroplex area. NGIC initial estimate pays $110/hr. A local shop want $150/hr. I guess I'm not in Kansas anymore.

If you have had negotiations with National General on this topic, I'd like to hear how it worked out.

Did they give you a suggestion where to take?

I'm waiting for a return call from NGIC as to approved/recommended local shops.

I would think that the insurance company must pay the going rate for the area that you are insured in

Unless there is a clause in your policy that stipulates what rates they will pay, I think they would be required to pay the going rate minus your deductible.
Read your policy and determine if their coverage is limited, and if not, contact your state insurance commission, and file a complaint.

I found a repair shop that would work with NGIC.

NGIC is not required to pay any rate that any shop wants to charge.

You may have to find a shop outside of DC.

NGIC can give you a list of shops they work well with.

I would certainly open up some dialogue with NG. I’m not saying they’re right, but if more companies would do that, maybe things wouldn’t be so out of line price wise. And maybe that one shop is out of line.

Please trust me. I’m no friend of any insurance company. Good luck.

They are not explicitly required to pay some specific rate, but they are contractually required under insurance law to "make you whole", either by repair or decalring it a total loss. So they have to be able to identify at least one shop in your area that is qualified to do the work and will accept the rate they offer. "In your area" is subjective, of course, as is "qualified", and arguing with an insurer is expensive and frustrating.

Thanks SO much for the good advice from all of you. I'm now aware of other repair/authorized shops "in my area" ... but getting a return call from them is now the challenge.

My RV is fully functional (i.e., road worthy) and I would hope to take it to a reliable shop for the initial estimate, but I don't want to *leave* it there for some weeks (months??) while needed parts are acquired and then I get slotted into their worker's schedule. Any predictions on this "wish" of mine?

Depends on what parts are needed and where they come from. Body panels and molded parts are the long lead items unless they are the same as is used in current production.

The shop doesn't like having your rig hanging around either. Discuss with the shop when they do the estimate - see if you can keep the rig at home until ordered parts are in, or at least scheduled. And consider asking them to repair parts rather than replacing where practical. It may cost more in labor, but cut the wait time.
